I think he's telling this story to his hypothetical son, The one he would have had if she wasn't dying 'When i met your mother' Couldnt have had the son he's talking to as she died So he's just left with the memories of her and the regret of what could have been (Even though the regret isn't his fault) Life can do terrible things. |

I dont know if anyone's said this yet, but here i go: I think that 'Please someone help me I'm dying here in front of you' I see this as: He is in a sealed tank of water (the relationship) and he cant get out as he may love the girl too much or just cant let go and its killing him and the audience is composed of the girl and his friends that have seen him in relationships before and just think that its part of the illusion and he's just going to move on I thought of this as Houdini in the tank and when he fails to escape he looks out to the auidence just wanting someone to notice whats happening but nobody realises or helps because they just think its part of the trick.
