| Matchbox Twenty – How Far We've Come Lyrics | 14 years ago |

What I really liked about this song is the way he tells a story about an apocalypse to communicate a broader point, but each individual line doesn't have a double meaning. It's not like you can really go over all the lyrics and analyse each one, like "oh, when he says 'I sat down on the street' that really means..." but it's more like there's a full story, a fictional story, of a man waking up to face the end of the world, and within that story is the point that he's making about examining your life and your accomplishments, or the accomplishments of humanity, and trying to better yourself. I think there's also quite a cynical element in there, in the "let's see how far we've come" line. It doesn't strike me as a celebration, but rather that he's suggesting we haven't come very far at all. |

This song is really sad and beautiful... Like others have said, I think it's about losing someone and feeling responsible for that, whether that's a death or a breakup or the alienation of a friend. I like how the first verse is about trying to forget the person - "let these pages fly away... reflected off a window is where you'll stay" - but then the second verse is all about remembering them, being desperate to remember because you miss them - "I built you out of nothing to have you near". And then in the bridge, there's the feeling of guilt and responsibility, and then it goes back to trying to forget again. I love how it's a story, but it's kind of heartbreaking. |

| Cute Is What We Aim For – The Curse of Curves Lyrics | 14 years ago |

"I've got the gift of one liners And you've got the curse of curves" The guy has decided to go after this beautiful woman, and her body is a curse because she'll always attract the sort of guys who just want to pick her up with one liners and be done with her. "the question that comes forward: are you perspiring from the irony, or sweating to these lyrics?" This is one of my favourite lines, actually. I think here he's trying to assess her intelligence, ie. is she 'perspiring from the irony', which sounds clever and educated, or is she just sweating to the lyrics, like any average bimbo. "you're a dead fit, but my wit won't allow it" He thinks she's attractive, but ultimately he still thinks he's more intelligent than her, and therefore won't bother to invest any real emotion in her because he feels he is superior. She's just another conquest. "the inside lingo had me at hello, and we go where the money goes" The inside lingo could refer to popularity or being in with a particular group, and the next line obviously refers to wealth. So here he's talking about just associating with people who are cool and rich and appealing in that way rather than for personality or any valid personal connection. "I want someone provocative and talkative but it's so hard when you're shallow as a shower" he's chatting up whatever attractive female member of the in-crowd he selected earlier, and is sort of trying to make intelligent conversation and get a connection but she's just a moron really, and has no depth. I like "shallow as a shower" as a simile. "and from what I've heard, with skin you'll win" He's heard that she has a reputation for being pretty skanky and maybe sleeping her way up the ranks, so to speak. She uses her physical attractiveness to get what she wants by showing some skin. "her bone structure screams 'touch her, touch her!' and she's got the curse of curves" she seriously is pretty hot "so with the combination of my gift with one liners and my way my way with words..." he'll most definitely be sleeping with her, he's decided. "It seems I'm too hip to keep tight-lipped" He brags about bangin' her, to make people like him "and you're on the gossip team" she knows he's been bragging because she talks about people behind their backs as well "you're making something out of nothing and jealousy's the cousin, the cousin of greed" She's upset that he's been talking about sleeping with her, but he doesn't think it's a big deal because he never cared about anything other than sleeping with her anyway. Jealousy is the cousin of greed that they both show in their shallow efforts to be wealthy and popular by using people. "we all have teeth that can bite underneath to where the reality grows yeah that's where mine go" it was mentioned already about this referring to looking beneath the exterior and seeing the truth of people. The teeth metaphor might be because it can hurt to have someone strip back a facade and see what sort of person you really are, it can be vicious. I really like this song, and overall it pretty much seems to be about the struggle between wanting things that seem important, like sex, money or popularity and the deeper desire to have a satisfying connection with somebody. |

| I thought the point was don't get too attached to being alive, because it won't last. | |
| The Hoosiers – Money To Be Made Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I thought it went: "Your safety is a show" as in fake. But I could easily be wrong. However, the other part is definitely "sun round the Earth"/ "Twice what I'm worth". |

| The Hoosiers – Everything Goes Dark Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I don't think this is about a specific person, exactly. To me, it's a look at the hopelessness of society right now, the way vanity and material possessions are coveted above all else, but in reality those things are meaningless because in the end you'll die and leave it all behind, and it won't matter what you chose, what you owned, how you looked, what or who you loved. And really, the only reason a life of decadence and convenience is so highly valued is because people KNOW that they will die, and must distract themselves from that bleak reality by indulging in whatever happiness they can find, and making themselves admirable and attractive to the living. | |

Ok, HERE is the interview I read where he talks about dressing up Imogen as a guy and doing weird things with her. That is so horribly strange out of context that I had to track it down. http://www.blurt-online.com/features/view/398/ And this song is so eerie, I love it. |

The funniest part was when he talked about how he wanted to make the film clip with Imogen, dress her up as a guy and make her do some weird things. He has interesting ideas. |

| Phoenix – Lisztomania Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I realise that this is largely irrelevant and ridiculous, but I feel inclined to direct everyone's attention to the most bizarre thing I have ever seen, namely a synopsis for the film "Lisztomania": "The scandalous tale of superstar composer Franz Liszt's hedonistic life of groupies, sex and music, as well as his rivalry with the scheming Richard Wagner. After enjoying the fruits of his celebrity, Liszt tries to find true love with one of his mistresses, Princess Caroline. The Pope (Ringo Starr) forbids their marriage and Liszt attempts to adopt a monastic lifestyle. Wagner marries Liszt's daughter, and then battles for world domination by unleashing the Viking God, Thor, and his troupe of robot Nazis. The only way to save the world is through Liszt and all of his mistresses in a rocket ship to destroy the resurrected Wagner who has now become the Nazi Antichrist." Some part of me dearly hopes that Phoenix have seen this film. |
