| From First to Last – The Other Side Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| One might read in it a critic to the music industry. | |
| From First to Last – Deliverance! Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Not sure what he says in the first line; it's not written in the booklet, but it's not "there are other ways" for sure. Maybe "the ones" is correct, but it's said with a strange accent. | |
| Silverstein – In Silent Seas We Drown Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| "I'm telling all my friends I love the highs and lows"... Shane's girlfriend's favourite band is Taking Back Sunday; their most popular album is called Tell All Your Friends, so it might be a slight reference to it. It's hard to think that Shane didn't ever think about that. | |
| Funeral for a Friend – Nails Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
[it's "...some passing trends that let us down every day"] Obviously this song is referring to FFAF's "emo/arena rock" era (2003-2008), when they were forced to make music not according to their own will, but to the will of Atlantic Records. All that Matt is saying here is that they now no longer want to present themselves in a false way, but they just want to make the music that they feel like doing, just like they did back in 2001-2 when the band started. |
|
| Silverstein – A Great Fire Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| As in the previous comment. :-) I've always considered this song as a summary of the whole story. | |
| Silverstein – Vices Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Actually, the story is about a man who is betrayed by his wife. When he discovers that, he burns his house to the ground to kill her and her lover. Then he escapes and kills himself. In this song, he finds out about the "love affair" between his wife and his friend. |

| Theatre of Tragedy – Virago Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I think the chorus might be "translated" in another way if you interpret "weal" as "mark produced by a whip" and "daut' " (=dauting) as "caress". And a couple lines after, I think "drear" is an adjective standing for "dreary", which is referred to "dirdum" (together with "behesting"). So the meaning would be "work my dreary and behesting blame" --> punish me (with the whip). Good job, though. :-) |
|
| Theatre of Tragedy – Bacchante Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Definitely about Bacchanalia, the ancient Rome celebrations in honour of Bacchus (at least the literal meaning). "An ivy-crown'd and dancing, and fawn'd and trancing". "Bacchante" is a woman who takes part in Bacchanalia. | |
| Silverstein – Live To Kill Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Shane: "This song is taking a shot at the "rivalry" so many bands out there seem to have with each other. I find it annoying and childish when bands think they deserve more than another band, or are "bigger" or whatever. During the last 11 years, I've seen it all: bands come from nothing and turn into millionaires and lose it all just as fast. This song is about that, and about the greed so many artists have." | |
| Silverstein – Darling Harbour Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Shane: "Josh came up with the music for this song just as we were finishing up writing 2009’s A Shipwreck In The Sand, so we didn't have time to record it. I’m almost glad, because this song became really special to me and I needed the vocals to be perfect in terms of what I wanted to say and the vibe I wanted to come out of it. Fitting it into the concept of Shipwreck wouldn't have been right for that song or record." This song was inspired by both Sydney (Darling Harbour, King Street...), which is one of their favourite places in the world, and an episode of Lost that Shane dreamt of one night. |
|
| Silverstein – Burning Hearts Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Shane: "This song came out way better than I expected. I had a lot of trouble figuring out what to sing over it, and then all of a sudden it just clicked and I wrote the chorus melody. I remember when I first sang this song in the studio, we ran it all the way through and the producer was just blown away. He wanted to keep the first take and just let it be. I thought maybe I should do one more, though. Neil played a pretty crazy solo in this song, too, which I don't think we've ever really done before." | |
| Silverstein – The Artist Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Might be about music industry (again)? "Now they decide who lives and dies", and of course musicians are artists. "Someone's shot him down, left him without his soul. His body's laid to rest and underground he'll stay, with hopes to resurrect and live again another day. His peers won't come around, they're too disgraced to face another soldier down, his life's work a waste." It would make sense. | |
| Silverstein – The Artist Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Shane: "This is one of my favorites, and was the last one of all the songs we finished for the album. We literally had the whole record done, and I just decided one day we should try to write a super heavy song–no rules, just completely by feel. There was no worrying about song structure or anything like that. I came up with the intro dissonant-sounding riff, and we decided just to go right into a breakdown. The song came really organically, and it just flows. We got our friend Brendan [Murphy] from the awesome band Counterparts to sing with me and his voice fits perfectly. I actually think his voice inspired some of my performance a bit on this track." | |
| Silverstein – Texas Mickey Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Shane: "We reworked this song a bunch too [like Intervention]. We took out a verse and chorus, took away an extra part and added a new part. It was a song I think a lot of people in the band wanted to give up on, but I refused. I knew it was going to be great. We got Anthony [Raneri] from Bayside to sing the ending with me, and he added a flair that really made the song pop." And "Texas Mickey" in Canada is an expression that indicates a large bottle of liquor (3,000 ml). |
|
| Silverstein – Texas Mickey Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| It's "trapped inside" and not "trapping"; "too many just a regret" instead of "just to regret", and "as you take me away from my friends" is "as you take away my friends". :-) | |
| Silverstein – Good Luck With Your Lives Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Shane: "This is one of those songs that just starts with an awesome guitar riff and goes from there. Neil [Boshart, guitar] was noodling around at practice, played something and right away I was like, “Dude, that is awesome!” Next thing I know, after a couple hours, we had all the music finished. Writing vocals over that riff was hard, because I wanted the guitar part to sing on its own and not have the vocals get in its way, or vice versa. I remember when we recorded the original demo for this, we had a huge argument for an hour over a single note at the end. We couldn't agree on which note should go over one of the harmonies. Looking back, it was so silly, but we definitely are perfectionists even with things no one would probably ever notice." And they both said that it was about their past experiences in the music industry --> with their previous label. |
|
| Silverstein – Intervention Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Shane: "This song probably changed the most from when we first wrote it to how it is on the record. We ended up overhauling the whole verse and made it double time, but there's a demo version out from when it was slower. It's cool to see how one change of the drums can make the vibe of a song so different." Seems that this is reviewers' favourite one off the album. I do actually like it, but I think that many other tracks are far better than this one (Replace You, Burning Hearts, Sacrifice, The Artist, just to name a few). | |
| Silverstein – Intervention Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| They're definitely right. The booklet confirms that. | |
| Silverstein – Forget Your Heart Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Shane: "I probably wrote the intro clean guitar riff to this song about five years ago, but I never knew where to go with it. I constantly tried to write a dark, slower song, but it just never felt right. Then I had the idea to try to make a really dark intro that turned into a super-catchy verse and chorus. I like this song because it takes the listener to a lot of different places. We also recorded a piano version of this, just vocals and piano, and that came out really different, too." | |
| Silverstein – Forget Your Heart Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
These are the correct lyrics (taken from the booklet) Fight these eyes, they're drawing you inside. Signed my name in marker, Watched the clouds as they got darker, Felt it start to slip away. All the schemes were made and plotted, All the rules have been forgotten now. I made it by the skin of my teeth again this time. I'm waiting, still waiting to getaway, and make a change, Seasons last forever in this maze. Forget your heart. It's weighing you down inside as you confide your life to someone else. Maybe we're scared to be alone, We're not prepared to throw the stones, And watch them drift out of our control. I braced my body for the sudden impact that was more than I, Ever thought that it would be. And when it knocked me over, I've never felt more stiff and sober, Now I'm trying to get up and runaway. I'm wasting, I'm wasting my life away, I've gotta change, I've gotta burn the book and turn the page. Forget your heart. It's weighing you down inside as you confide your life to someone else. Maybe we're scared to be alone, We're not prepared to throw the stones, And watch them drift out of our control. There's no return to what you had when you started, Before you lost control, you will never recover. Fight these eyes, they're drawing you inside. Lie down and break down, you're dead Lie down before you lose control Lie down and break down, you're dead Lie down before you lose control Forget your heart. It's weighing you down inside as you confide your life to someone else. Maybe we're scared to be alone, We're not prepared to throw the stones, And watch them drift out of our control. |

| Silverstein – Sacrifice Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Shane Told told (haha...) AP: "This was also [like Medication] loosely inspired by waiting for my girlfriend. She was getting ready in the bathroom, and you know how long girls sometimes take in there. I picked up a guitar and was just fooling around. I came up with the intro guitar riff, the verse riff and the bridge riff in about five minutes. It was funny because once she came out and was ready to go, I wasn't because I wanted to finish writing the song. I had to record it on my computer really fast in case I forgot how it went." | |
| Silverstein – Medication Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| ...said Shane Told. | |
| Nightwish – The Crow, The Owl And The Dove Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| And the fact that those 2 lines are sung in Cumbrian language might suggest that they are a sort of magic words. I like to think of them being pronounced by a Celtic druid in the middle of a forest. :-) their repetition strengthens this idea, in my opinion. | |
| Nightwish – The Crow, The Owl And The Dove Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
If what I've found on the Internet is right, the two verses sung by Troy are in Cumbrian language and they mean something like "go to the river, you'll find a fairyland". Then the song is structured like a ballad, with repeated verses and a protagonist who comes across different characters, that are the 4 birds represented in the song: the crow, symbol of pride (in Mr. Holopainen's opinion, at least); the owl, symbol of wisdom; the dove, symbol of peace and love (especially in Christian culture); the swan (which doesn't appear on the CD and whose lines are sung in a different way), symbol of beauty. All these elements are in the chorus, too, among the characteristics that Tuomas refuses, preferring innocence and truth (which are universal themes in his works). I won't try to guess whether the 4 birds represent kinds of human beings. |
|
| Theatre of Tragedy – Siren Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| One meaning is of course about sirens luring, I think. | |
| Theatre of Tragedy – Aœde Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Aœde was one of the three original Muses, and she was the Muse of song. I think that the meaning of this song (at least, one of the possible meanings) is that Raymond is doing a "laud" to Aœde because she gives him the power of singing and writing poems: Parched of words [...], I beseech more (words). I lap of you, I need you. [...] Wash me in your floret (or in your avail? Who knows...), I want more! [...] I let you come into me. |
|
| Theatre of Tragedy – Angélique Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Ah, I'd forgotten: " 'vaunt" is short for "avaunt", which means "(go) away!". Had it been "vaunt", it wouldn't have had the apostrophe before it. ;-) | |
| Theatre of Tragedy – Angélique Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Angelica is also the name of the protagonist of Ludovico Ariosto's "Orlando furioso". I don't know what it exactly has to do with the song, though. XD Raymond said that the last stanza means something like "don't become fond of this devil, or you'll turn into one yourself", whereas in the previous stanza there is no suicide. Also, the speaker is a male character. Draig did a great job, really. :-) |
|
| Funeral for a Friend – Spinning Over The Island Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| In the booklet, a part of the lyrics is missing, from "A well-made dream" and onward. He might say "destructed for you", maybe? :-| | |
| La Dispute – Shall Never Lose Its Power Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
The line "Fed with bodies and bread soaked in blood" is a clear reference to Eucharist. This song is linked to the other one in the Untitled 7'' EP ("Only everything below"): "still thunders onward", "hand with its palm up", "hands tied to train tracks", "graceful steeples (collapsing)" are all elements which also appear on the other song. |
|
| La Dispute – Only Everything Below Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
Valinor, to put it in a simple way, is more or less like a sort of "paradise" to which the Elves are admitted after abandoning the Middle Earth in Tolkien's literature, and it is situated to the west of the Middle Earth. The line "Still, the flowers open as she passes, and the birds they sing to greet her" is a quotation from the Valaquenta, which is the 2nd chapter of Tolkien's Silmarillion, and there he is writing about Vána, one of the Valar, which are some kind of "angels". |
|
| La Dispute – Said the King To the River Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
It's not "slightly feigned chagrin" but "slyly feigned chagrin", which makes more sense. ;-) And the Wind doesn't say "Breathe" but "Freeze" to the waters. |
|
| La Dispute – Two Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| And the last verse was used as a title for the opening and closing tracks of following album "Somewhere at the bottom of the river [...]". | |
| La Dispute – One Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Their song "The Last Lost Continent" was partially inspired by this passage. | |
| La Dispute – The Last Lost Continent Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
The title and many lines were inspired by this passage from Tom Robbins' novel "Still Life with Woodpecker", which is also read by Jordan in the song called "One": < To this last, Princess Leigh-Cheri responded, "There are three lost continents…we are one: the lovers.">> |
|
| La Dispute – The Last Lost Continent Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Jordan: "The message is in the text, and I think it, like any piece of artwork, is to an extent open to interpretation. I have a few specific ideas about what it means, but I'm sure it will vary from person to person. The message I think I'd like people to leave with is that, no matter what tragedy befalls you, no matter if you can cross your personal river or not, there will always be others involved in a similar struggle. There is a hope in that connection." | |

The actual Latin lyrics are these: Circa mea pectora multa sunt suspiria De tua pulchritudine, quae me laedunt misere. Iam amore virginali totus ardeo. Amor volat undique, captus est libidine. Tui lucent oculi sicut solis radii, Sicut splendor fulgoris, qui lucem donat tenebris. |
