Basic to born again forms of Christianity (the most common religious view in America) is the idea that you "die to the world" to be "born to life everlasting in Christ." Once you have that 'key,' the poetry all seems to fit nicely into place. She's a fallen, sinful woman, despairing at the emptiness and pain and misery of her life, but a voice inside her (the chorus) keeps telling her not to turn away from Christ. In the final stanza: fallen angels at my feet whispered voices at my ear Is the continuing temptation of the sinful life and the people in it who are dragging her down. death before mine eyes lying next to me, i fear She knows the sinful path she is following leads to nothing but death .... and probably soon. she beckons me , shall i give in upon my end, shall i begin The 'she' is probably the voice inside her that has been trying to save her. forsaken(ing) all i've fallen for i rise to meet the end She forsakes her life of sin, deciding to "die to the world." |

A few of you have posted comments to the effect that "Welcome to Paradise, soldier" is a dis on soldiers, saying they regard a planet in slaughter to be like Paradise. I used to think that, too, but I just realized I had it wrong. Gaia being in slaughter means the soldiers are slaughtered, especially. They are on the front line of slaughter, so to speak. "Welcome to Paradise" means "You Die." If you have any doubts, listen to 10th Man Down. That shows Nightwish's view of soldiers as people trapped in a Hell made by people safe back at home. |

On second thought, he doesn't feel sorry for her at all. The word grouping should be: 1) This one is for you, for you, only for you. (the song was written about a particular woman) 2) Just give in to it. (there is nothing you can do about it now) 3) Never think again I feel for you. (you waited too long and now my love for you is gone forever) |

My take: Both voices are the guy. Tuomas uses Tarja's voice as the voice of innocence/love. The guy loved a woman, his first love. She left him among the thorns and wolves. Someday (soon implied) he will give up caring (feed the serpent). His pain and his love for her will be dead and buried. Innocence/love is gone. The voice shifts to Marco. Once the love is buried and as soon as his bed is warmed with another woman, his former lover will realize she has made a mistake. She will be his puppet. It's a draw, though, since they've both lost. He will feel sorry for her, but in a mean way. 'Never think again' is never think I will care again. "The endless nightmare, devil's lair" is the only line that doesn't seem to fit, but that could be personal. Maybe she dumped the guy because she didn't like his metal music type friends and career. |

The protected: "They wait for me back home The live with eyes turned away They were the first ones to see They are the last ones to bleed" He cannot take the killing any more even though he knows he has only done what he has had to do. The boy he had to kill was too much for him to bear. He will not kill any more, but he will march on until he is killed. The 'gallows' is figurative. That is how it sounds to me. BTW, this song might be drawn from Chris Ryan's novel, "10th Man Down." It was published shortly before the song was written. I have not read it. |

This song is next after Sacrament of Wilderness on Oceanborn. In Sacrament the hunters made their alliance with the canines. In Passion and the Opera mankind has discovered agriculture and the destruction of the virgin wilderness has begun. "Breasts which never nursed" are the mountains. "Naked limbs reflecting from the moon" are tree branches. Infinite sleep is death. "Their satisfaction, my infinite sleep" refers to mankind not being satisfied until no wilderness is left. |

I do not think it says you should not seek to solve life's mysteries. Quite the opposite. The more you challenge the Riddler, the more you will discover you do not know, and thus the more 'ignorant' you become, always approaching the poet's paradise. "I wish to be touched Not by the hands of where's and why's But by the Ocean's minds" We will not find wisdom in raw data, as necessary as raw data may or may not be to knowing what it true. However, we may find some wisdom here, for example, sharing views of the meaning of a poem. That's my interpretation, anyway. Beautiful song. |

| My take on the meaning of the last part is different from those who've posted earlier. I agree with bythemark that "This world ain't ready for the Ark" is positive, but I think "Mankind works in mysterious ways" is also extremely positive. Somehow we cling to hope and love even here on Planet Hell. It's a mystery how we do it in the face of all of the horror and madness. | |
