i hear "i'm on my way TO HELL" every time. i also think that makes more sense with the lyrics. i think the lyrics "i've tried, god knows that i've tried" refer to his problems with trying to accept god and the rules that come with religion. the way i see it, when he says he's on his way to hell he is basically saying, i'm content with being a non-believer, even if i'm wrong and i end up in hell. the devil and god is a lot about jesse's struggle with his beliefs. i think throughout everything he was going through in his life in the period they wrote that album he was questioning his faith, hence the title. i think he has lost any and all belief in god. and i think he feels content with that. |

its pretty obvious that on letting go is almost entirely about god and religion. i think at one point in his life anthony had a relationship with a god and that over the years... like many people... it fell apart when he began questioning things. i think this song is about anthony moving back in the direction of having a relationship with 'god' up on the pebble driveway there sits a house, it's the loneliest place (the house is a metaphor for anthony's relationship with god, or current lack of one) i haven't spent much time there, i wasn't allowed, it just didn't feel right (for awhile he pushed away any belief in god and abandoned faith) i open both of my eyes and still see an empty place, so empty but if i keep them closed, then there's still a chance that something/one is out there (when he tries to open up to the idea of god again he still feels empty) but it's all built upon a burial ground, it just doesn't feel right (its hard to open up to something he's closed himself off from for such a long time) i made a promise to you long ago that i'd do anything to keep this home (when he says 'to you' i think he's talking to himself. he went through a period of trial where he lost faith, but i think deep inside he always had some inner relationship or connection with a higher spirit) on top the frozen creek, i would love to take you there (the creek is a metaphor for his soul. it being frozen symbolizes his faith, the water, freezing. then i think he is talking to himself again when he says i would love to take you there. i think this is the most important line. he would like to have a relationship with god again) thats just how i view these lyrics song... |
