I always see those first lines in context of wrapping up the paris journal poem: ___________________________ Tell them you came and saw sexual inuendo no doubt, JM's version of the sacred femanine metaphor, but it's very - defeatist here "you've beaten me, but I accomplished something right?" also the very good - play on words "veni, vidi, vici" - "I came, I saw, I conquered" and look'd into my eyes and saw the shadow of the guard receding Thoughts in time and out of season Dam I wish I had a clearer idea what this meant. If I could find these metaphors used - somewhere else in a JM poem.. The Hitchhiker stood by the side of the road and levelled his thumb Also with a roman touch: in the colliseum when the defeated's fate was decided with a - levelled thumb that could point up or down in the calm calculus of reason. |

The metaphor of the hitchhiker JM used a few times in his poetry. It sort of evolved from the idea of the indian shaman entering his soul, to a sadistic hitcher just wanting to use him, as a vessel I think this is a song portraying a lot of disillusionment "where friends to lie and drift insanely in their own private gardens" pretty sure JM isn't speaking for anyone but himself here though. It's all metaphorical. Except of course for that dog without a bone line, that's a simile ;) |
