To me, this song is pure sex. I think he is singing to someone who he would like to....... It is amazing. This just happens to be my crazy opinion. I think of one person when I hear this song. He knows who he is. I also happen to love "Golden" and "Rolling Back". They are pretty quiet and cerebral (at least they get into MY dense brain and make me think a bit). They are lovely tunes. Jim James is very unique. I think what MMJ is doing is very different from many bands right now. Check out his "Rocket Man" (Elton John) and "Suspicious Minds" (Elvis), too. Really great covers, in my opinion. |

This song seems very dreamy to me. When you dream, you aren't "in control". When you fall in love with someone, this is beyond your control as well. When you take your "chances on a big jet plane" what happens is out of your control, too. Women aren't all the same. He has just been through a sad break up and is trying to mend his heart. He is "Going to California", and many people think of California as the golden land. (The land of hopes, dreams and possibilities.) He is going to try to find the woman of his dreams. He wants to find her, but he is afraid to take chances. He wants to love her, telling himself "it's not as hard as it seems". But, it will remain a dream because his heart has been broken and he is afraid of taking chances again. To me, this song is about trying to mend a broken heart and coming to terms with loss and fears, rather than finding the "perfect woman". |

Just because I am trying to cope with a loss, your post struck me. I am obsessed with music and I am guessing you are too. I have a few songs to recommend... Stuff I've been listening to recently.... I highly suggest downloading them. The Mountain by The Heartless Bastards- Cool tune and interesting lyrics. Kind of retro and weird. It Hurts Me Too by Big Bill Broonzy- A very old song. One of the many covers, but I like it. Great lyrics. Throw Me In The River by The Pines- So lugubrious and so beautiful. Listen to in solitude. Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones- As you know I am sure, one of the best. Masterplan by My Morning Jacket- From "It Still Moves". Amazing song. The Purgatory Line by The Drive By Truckers- Perfect lyrics. Burning "Soles" and all. Dire Wolf by The Grateful Dead- From "For The Faithful". Catchy little ditty w/a dark theme. Sweet Dreams by Roy Buchanan- No lyrics. Just beautiful. Impossible Germany by WIlco- From "Sky Blue Sky". The last lines about love and being "out of place" really strike me. "Nothing more important than to know someone's listening, now I know you'll be listening." The guitar playing is out of this world. Going to California by Led Zeppelin- From IV. Melancholy and gorgeous. I've always loved it and now it has new meaning to me. If sharing music is all that remains....Hey, I'll take it. :-) |
