| Hinder – Homecoming queen Lyrics | 15 years ago |

Like everybody else said, she's just a pretty girl that got into the popular crowd without really wanting to. She had so much pressure put on her that she finally broke down and left for LA, just to get away from all the expectations. "Its been five years since Ive seen her face Shes the holy ghost lost without a trace" -She was the "holy ghost", the perfect one, and she disappeared without a word to anyone. "And now were left with the what-ifs Its been five years since she left for LA" -Everybody expected so much from her, and they're wondering what ever happened to her. Sounds like she left for LA and never came back, leaving everybody with the what-ifs. "Shes an angel with a dirty face And it seems to me Shes a casualty of all the pressure That we put on her And now we've lost her for good" -She's a victim of all the pressure that was put on her. Now they have forever lost the real her. "Its such a shame shame shame That our homecoming queen Was a lot like you and a lot like me And she never walked on water Guess no one really saw her" -Everybody thought it was a shame she wasn't really as perfect as she seemed. No one really saw HER. They only saw "Homecoming Queen". "She was so adored by everyone When it came to looks she was next to none" -Everybody adored her. Admired her. Envied her. She was beautiful. "But loved partying and having too much fun Then she hooked up with the wrong someone And he promised everything under the sun" -She liked to have fun. Too much fun, which showed an imperfection. She ended up with the wrong guy. The guy wasn't right for HER, he was right for the fake her. "And it seems to me Shes a casuality of all the pressure That he put on her And now weve lost her for good" -Again, she's a victim of pressure the guy put on her. The real her is lost now after being so pressured into seeming perfect. "Its such a shame shame shame That our homecoming queen Had a lot to prove and so many to please Shes just somebody's daughter Just looking for somebody to love her" -She had to prove herself "perfect", and she had to make so many people happy. She never made herself happy. She's just an average girl, and she wants somebody to love her and accept her for herself. "Well I never knew you Wish I could've saved you From losers that drained you Before you got strung out With so much potential How could you let us down" -He wishes he had been close to her, so he could see the real her. And he would have "saved her" from all the pressure by letting her be herself. The "losers", or her friends, drained her. She became "strung out". (I don't think that means drugs. "Strung out" means debilitated from long-term drug use. Here, I think it just means she was weak after pretending for so long.) Then "With so much potential, how could you let us down?" is like what everybody thought of her after she disappeared. Like, they all thought she could've done better with her life after being the perfect homecoming queen. Anyway, AWESOME song. I was obsessed with it for awhile when it first came out, then I just heard it again, and I'm looooving it all over again. Greatness. |

Try to have an open mind here; I think this is about a guy leaving a girl, despite the fact that it will break both their hearts, because it's better for her. The whole mother thing, I think it's just supposed to represent that he needs to be worried about. Like the "medication" is probably pills for depression. "I have to block out thoughts of you So I don't lose my head They crawl in like a cockroach Leaving babies in my bed" He doesn't want to think of her, because it bothers him very seriously. He gives an example of cockroaches multiplying in his bed, to show how disturbing the thoughts of her are to him. "Dropping little reels of tape To remind me that I'm alone Playing movies in my head That make a porno feel like home" He is being reminded that she isn't there, and he either remembers the times they spent in bed, or something explicit as a porno. "A nervous bleeding in my brain An ounce of peace is all I want for you Will you never call again? And will you never say that you love me Just to put it in my face? And will you never try to reach me it is I that wanted space" All he wants for her is peace. He want her to forget all about him. He doesn't want her to worry and call him, he doensn't want to be reminded that their love is still there. "Hate me today Hate me tomorrow Hate me for all the things I didn't do for you Hate me and wait, yeah wait for it to swallow Hate me so you can finally see whats good for you" He wants her to hate him. He knows that the only way he can help her is if she isn't with him, and he also knows the only way she wouldn't want to be with him is if she hated him. "I'm sober now for 3 whole months It's one accomplishment that you helped me with The one thing that always tore us apart Is the one thing that I won't touch again" He sobered up after they broke up, because he knows it’s the reason he was bad for her. He won’t drink again because he knows it’s what tore them apart. “In a sick way I want to thank you For holding my head up late at night While I was busy waging wars on myself You were trying to stop the fight” This is my favorite line of the song. Also the most intense, I think. He’s talking about when he was drunk; “waging wars on himself” refers to beating himself up, maybe having suicidal thoughts. But she stayed up with him, trying to help, trying to stop “the fight”. “You never doubted my warped opinions On things like suicidal hate You made me compliment myself When it was way too hard to take" She never doubted that he was serious about suicide. She made him think positively when life was too much to handle. "So I'll drive so fucking far away That I'll never cross your mind And do whatever it takes in your heart To leave me behind" He wants to leave and make her forget him, and he'll do whatever it takes to get her to leave him behind and not love him. "And when a sad heart I say bye to you and wave Kicking shadows on the street For every mistake that I have made" He leaves, and thinks about how many mistakes he's made. "And like a baby boy I never was a man Until I saw your blue eyes cry And I held your face in my hand And then I fell down yelling "make it go away"" He grew up when he saw her crying. Her sadness made him realize he was screwing up. "Fell down yelling 'make it go away'" is talking about maybe a breakdown, where he just wants the problems to go away. "Just make it stop Come back and shine just like it used to be And then she whispered: "How could you did this to me?"" They want the happy times back. She feels betrayed and abandoned. My interpretation. |

| Better Than Ezra – A Lifetime Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Okay, i think he starts out telling the story of Allie, who I took to be a girl, and then he is talking to her when he says "I knew you'd want it that way". But here's what I think happened: (And I believe it is a true story. Possibly in relation to Allison Foley.) "Allie woke up 8AM Graduation day. Got into her car, And crashed along the way." --She was on her way to graduate. Most people are assuming high school, but it could be college. Also that could be a reason "Allison Foley" was 29 in the other song if there is any relation. "We arrived late to the wake" --I think they had a small group of friends "Stole the urn while they Looked away, And drove to the beach 'Cause I knew you'd want it That way" --They took the urn and took Allie to the beach because she'd want it that way. "And you were standing On the hood of the car Singing out loud When the sun came up" -- He is remembering the times she was singing on the hood of the car as the sun came up to the REM song he speaks of later. "And I know I wasn't right, But it felt so good." --Stealing her urn wasn't right, but it felt good because they were freeing her at the beach, which is what he knew she wanted. "And your mother didn't mind, Like I thought she would." --Allie's mother didn't get as mad as he thought she would about stealing the urn and taking her to the beach. I think her mother knew it was what she would've wanted too. "And that REM song was playing In my mind. And three and a half minutes Felt like a lifetime" --An REM song was playing in his head as he remembered her, because it was the song she had been singing to on the hood of the car, and remembering her felt like a lifetime. "And you move like water I could drown in you. And I fell so deep once, Till you pulled me through" --She meant alot to him, maybe he even loved her, and he went through a bad period in his life that she helped him through. "You would tell me "No one is allowed to be so proud They never reach out When they're giving up."" --Repeating, or remembering what she had told him that helped him. "Are you sitting in the lights? Or combing your hair again, And talking in rhymes? Are you sitting in the lights?" --He is wondering what she is doing now, and suggesting things he thinks she may be doing. "When I got home, heard the phone, Your parents had arrived. And your dad set his jaw Your mom just smiled and sighed." --Her father was angry, but his mother sort of agreed with what he'd done. "But they left soon And I went to my room. Played that disc that you'd given me, And I shut my eyes Swear I could hear the sea." --He listened to a disc she'd given him to remember her, and when he shut his eyes to remember her he could hear the sea from when he'd taken her to the beach. "When we were standing On the hood of your car Singing out loud when the sun came up." --He is rememvering them singing together on the hood of the car together to the REM song that plays through his mind as he remembers her. Just what I made out of it. Beautiful, beautiful song. Reminds me of sad times, but nonetheless a BEAUTIFUL song. |

Most people are saying it's about a relationship ending. Since the first time I heard it, I thought it was about suicide. Lines like; "strangle me" and "give the final blow" made me think that. "A falling star Least I fall alone" - I took this to mean he was falling, or on the road to suicide, and he was all alone. "The walls start breathing My mind's unweaving" - The way he is feeling is intense. "Maybe it's best you leave me alone" - He feels alone, so he wants to be left alone. "A weight is lifted on this evening" -He is going to take the pressure off and end his problems. "I give the final blow" -He is giving the final shot. He ends his life. "When darkness turns to light It ends tonight" -The "darkness" is his problems. He thinks by ending his life, and problems, he will be in the "light". This could mean the afterlife, or maybe at peace. "Just a little insight Won't make this right" -Somebody knowing just a little of how he is feeling won't help. "It's too late to fight It ends tonight, it ends tonight" -It's too late to change his mind. |
