And corrections to the lyrics: I think it's "sweetly fragrant" and "all day up in the valley". Family just doesn't make sense. haha. |

This is, without a doubt, taken from Song of Solomon. In the book Solomon and his lover are saying things back and forth to each other, admiring each others beauty (outer, reflecting inner), etc. And all those songs mentioned were probably a reference to this song because it's obviously much older. Beloved [a] 2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth– for your love is more delightful than wine. 3 Pleasing is the fragrance of your perfumes; your name is like perfume poured out. No wonder the maidens love you! 4 Take me away with you–let us hurry! Let the king bring me into his chambers. 12 While the king was at his table, my perfume spread its fragrance. 13 My lover is to me a sachet of myrrh resting between my breasts. 14 My lover is to me a cluster of henna blossoms from the vineyards of En Gedi. Lover 15 How beautiful you are, my darling! Oh, how beautiful! Your eyes are doves. Beloved 16 How handsome you are, my lover! Oh, how charming! And our bed is verdant. 4 Scarcely had I passed them when I found the one my heart loves. I held him and would not let him go till I had brought him to my mother's house, to the room of the one who conceived me. There really shouldn't be any further speculation about the meaning of this song. There's a lot more references but for the sake of being courteous, I will not include them. I encourage you to read it as it is possibly the most beautiful love poem ever written. And yes, it's in the Bible. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Song%20of%20Solomon%201&version=NKJV |

I love every song on this album...but I don't know what this song is really about. And although it doesn't really matter, I would still like to know. Anyone know what the "And the verse I read in jest And Matthew spoke to me Said, there's a flame that moves like a low-down pest That says, "you will be free" is about? I'm pretty sure it's an allusion to a story in the book of Matthew...I'm just clueless as to what that is. I wonder if she has a religious background. Anyone know? Or if she is at least spiritual? She obviously has a curiosity and interest in it...but is she actually spiritual? |

I've been listening to his music for quite some time, and in many of his songs, there is obviously a spiritual meaning behind it. The song "The Maker" has many biblical references. Being "a stranger in the eyes of The Maker" may be taken from Luke 13:22-27. Here is the passage: Luke 13.22-27 And He went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. Then one said to Him, "Lord, are there few who are saved?" And He said to them, "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, "Lord, Lord, open for us,' and He will answer and say to you, "I DO NOT KNOW YOU, where you are from,' then you will begin to say, "We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.' But He will say, "I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.' If you look at the structure of the song, you'll see that there is a sort of chronological order: He has run a "twisted line" and "couldn't see for the fog in his eyes" and because of that, he is found as a "stranger in the eyes of The Maker". All of a sudden there is a change. All of a sudden he is NOT a stranger in the hands of The Maker. The phrase "Brother John, have you seen the homeless daughters Standing there with broken wings" can also be a reference to Hebrews 13:12. "Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by doing so some people have been entertaining angels without knowing it." The phrase "Oh river rise from your sleep" can also be referring to people rising from their sleep. Much like the "sleep" at the middle of the song. The same sleep that caused the artist (not sure if Dave wrote the song) to be found as a stranger in the eyes of The Maker. (water and things related to water are used in the Bible to refer to a multitude of people) Hope this all makes sense... very Biblical from my standpoint. God bless! =) |
