Nothing More – Ballast Lyrics 11 years ago
Seems pretty straight forward about how the bitterness and grudges we hold on to bring us down instead of lifting us up. I guess this is the hard rock version of Let It Go. I really like the line, "Drowning just to keep score."

Hall and Oates – Family Man Lyrics 11 years ago
Final verse as I hear it:
She turned, tossed her head and then
Like her opening mover her final exit line.
He waited much too long
But by the time he got his courage up she was gone
And he screamed!
Repeat chorus
And I don't think I want it tonight.
Repeat chorus

Are there different versions out there?

Also, I don't think this has to be about a hooker (but wikipedia has the quote to say that it is). The price could be his relationship with his family. Back in the 80's divorce carried a different stigma. The woman is the metaphorical embodiment of a fork in the road. I like the honesty of being able to be pushed too far. I also like how the family is an abstract idea in the song and none of the family's virtues are being directly compared to the temptress; much like it would be in real life. I also like that when his will finally broke, the temptress was gone. She also was neither good nor evil and she did not seem to push him too far directly and ended up removing herself from the situation. For a hopeless 80's pop song there is a lot of realism embedded.

Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah Lyrics 11 years ago
The song as heard on Various Positions (1984) has just these lyrics and no other verses. And from these, I get the feeling that the first 2 verses are from a different speaker than the last 2. The first 2 verses are all about the subject "you." You doesn't like music. You had faith. You saw her. You was tied to a chair and more.

Seems to me like Leonard Cohen (LC) just got done hearing a story about how his friend or acquaintance had come to pass to steal his girl and that she had then ruined him the way she had LC. To LC it sounded like the guy was saying that he was David and the mistress Bathsheba. And at the end of the affair all the guy could do was to sing hallelujah, the way Leonard had. Verses 1 and 2 are LC repeating to the guy what the guy had just told him.

Then we find out You's reply to the summarization and implied judgment in the next 2 versus. Everything is now "I" but I will still call him "You." You replies to the accusation that he ruined LC's vision of the girl with, "Hey, I never even got to know the real her anyway. What's it to you? You didn't know the real her either. She would have hurt you one way or another. Look, it doesn't matter whether you heard me proclaim that I was a victim here too (the holy) or that I am a foul human (broken hallelujah); I told you the truth. And now that we both have worshiped her and lost her, the word hallelujah has new meaning. You (LC = King of Song) are the only one who can understand how the term for rejoice in worship can mean so much pain."

I imagine the whole thing taking place in a doorway of a small NY city apartment with a dirty hallway.

Laura Marling – My Manic and I Lyrics 12 years ago
I would like to present a different view from ""the gods that he believes never fail to disappoint me" is almost making a point of her coming to the realization that he no longer really thrills her and is just always disappointed. Or it could represent her faith in him and his beliefs."
Could it be that she is disappointed that the gods that he prays to don't heal him?

Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians – Circle Lyrics 13 years ago
I believe the song to be about her reaction to a breakup. "When the streets are wet, the colors slip into the sky But I don't why that means you and I are, that means you and I" implies that she can't finish the thought because it is too hard to face. Sometimes I think the voice saying "Me, I'm a part of your circle of friends" is external to the singer and sometimes I don't. I think it is supposed to be that way on purpose. Expresses both a sense of detachment from people and a little self-loathing. The giving up is an over reaction to the breakup. As if she is saying, "If I can't have him/her then I choose no one!" And that is "no one" as in not just these circle of friends, but nobody! It is a little over the top, but she really sells it! Great song! This song is what I think of when the Smashing Pumpkin's album "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" comes up. That's melancholy for those missing it. "Mellon Collie" is also a great album.

FM Static – Six Candles Lyrics 15 years ago
I believe each candle represents a year, like on a birthday cake. What I don't get is whether it is six years since he met God (although could be any loved one), or he feels like he only really has six years left before some deadline (like "I'll wait for you until I am 30" or "I'll give this music thing a try until I am 40" either way, he then adds "if there is no success, I am moving on, but I have faith I won't be").

Saliva – Your Disease Lyrics 15 years ago
I thought that it was about how he dated a girl that introduced him to a substance like meth or smack and even though they broke up, he has become addicted to the drugs.
"And I wanna take you down, but your soul cannot be found." - They are broken up
"And you know its only right cause it feels like paradise." - The drugs
The rest you know. It is the paradise line that makes me thing this, especially since it is in present tense.
I once thought about loving a woman that interferes with his career choice, but I don't see how any of that is "paradise" or "right."
The STD angle might make sense if the sex was particularly great by rock and roll standards.
I don't think he turned to drugs afterward, because it is Her disease that is killing him, not His disease.

Juice Newton – Angel Of The Morning Lyrics 15 years ago
Meaning of the song is about the walk of shame in the morning after a one-night-stand. Actually, I believe she prefers to call it the walk of an angle.

Juice Newton – Angel Of The Morning Lyrics 15 years ago
I always thought it was "Just touch my teeth before you leave me." It doesn't really change the meaning of the song, but it does make it more clean and less passionate. I prefer my lyrics. :p

Modest Mouse – Ocean Breathes Salty Lyrics 15 years ago
As I understood it, before reading here, I thought it was about a guy who left a girl who lived her life very religiously. The straightness to which she lived her life put a strain on the relationship (felt like jail) and even though he loved her, he had to leave. His parting shot to her was to say that even IF there is a heaven she would be just as uptight there as she is here. Although he leaves this barb, he also hopes he will meet her there and then they can party together. I do not believe that questioning the existence of an afterlife is the only theme in the lyrics. After reading all the posts, the ones I agree with most and believe to make the best case are the ones about a friend committing suicide and the singer’s reaction to it. I don't personally know any suicides so emotionally I register more with my first assumption.

The Avett Brothers – I and Love and You Lyrics 16 years ago
At first listen it seemed to me that he is leaving because the relationship has changed and he can no longer say “I love you.” On second listening, I wondered if he used his “words to fight” meant he hurt her emotionally and it was her that found the three words hard to say, not necessarily him. Well, at that point it doesn’t matter much because if either member of the couple can’t say it anymore, then it is time to leave. As he pulls into Brooklyn, he is a wiser man from having had the relationship and probably won’t fight as much in the next relationship. He also realizes the parallel between the physical road he is on, the career path he has chosen, and the emotional journey of leaving her. I don’t see any signs of addiction here.

A Perfect Circle – Judith Lyrics 16 years ago
You cannot prove that God does not exist any more than I can prove that he does. A lack of proof of existence does not equal a lack of existence. Before the sound barrier was broken, there were respected scientists that thought it did not exist. Others thought it did exist and was inpassable. Both were wrong. Neither of them had evidence until it was achieved. You two will know the validity of your statements the day you die and no sooner. Why agrue? Why spoil? Why not search?

Metric – Gimme Sympathy Lyrics 16 years ago
When I first heard it I immediately thought of Classmates.com. For those unfamiliar, it is a social networking website for reconnecting with people from highschool. When you fill out your profile they ask you Beatles or Rolling Stones as a way of defining yourself for the people who barely knew you then (otherwise they would already know the answer). The song seems to reflect the freedom of leaving high school and then finding your place in the world and that one person, craving the safety of the old, inviting you back. But you barely have time to post a photo on the website prefering instead to chase the unknown.

AFI – Girl's Not Grey Lyrics 16 years ago
Sorry for the late reply, I just discovered this site.
It seems to me that Girl’s Not Grey is a narrative and not personal.
The person wishing to die is the girl (not the lead singer) and she is not wishy-washy about it either.
In a world of black and white she is not grey. She has made up her mind.
The subject matter implies that she is not white either. Her thoughts are dark.
The narrative progresses as such:
Girl drowns herself;
Girl experiences death;
Girl is buried.
Song lyrics to backup theory:

Girl drowns herself:

I'll lay me down tonight
Much further down
Swim in the calm tonight
This art does drown — with each life being a work of God’s art, this one drowns.

Girl experiences death:

(What follows) me as the whitest lace of light — she had an out-of-body experience
(Will swallow whole) just begs to be imbrued? — drifted up the “tunnel of light” and everything so perfect it begs to be soiled
What follows has lead me to this place — the top of the tunnel
Where I belong, with all erased — heaven, everything before this moment no longer counts

Girl is buried:

All insects sing tonight — insects are happy to get fresh meat in the ground
The coldest sound — silence
I'd send God's grace tonight — to absolve the people who made her life so miserable of their sins or just plain planning on going to Heaven, hanging with the Lord, and passing back to Earth “God said to tell you ‘Hello.’”
Could it be found? — rhetorical, would those people recognize it if they got the message?

Watch stars go out tonight
On sinking ground — closing of coffin lid right before being lowered into the ground

What follows will swallow whole — some people contemplating suicide admit to wanting other people to feel the shame and guilt the victim suffers. They want the offenders to be swallowed by the guilt. OR — death is all consuming.

Those are my thoughts.
