| Is there any way we could find out what the answering machine is singing/saying? It complements the song so well! | |

I think I'm the only one that thinks this way but I'll give it a go: To quote one of the member's reviews of the albums, he said that Ocean Avenue was all about discovering yourself, Lights and Sounds was losing yourself to the real world, and Paper Walls was redefining yourself in the real world. With that in mind, I categorize each album as Romanticism (Ocean Avenue), Realism (Lights and Sounds), and a mix of between (Paper Walls). Following that I say that this is a GREAT introduction to the album as it slaps Romanticism in the face with such lines as "You be love and I'll be a liar. Tell it all and fill up the air but make it loud, cause nobody's there." Meaning you can romanticize all you want in your own fantasies but it will get you nowhere. Then it gets to "Stop. Turn. Take a look around. At all the lights and sounds." Be realistic and take what you have. "You gave it an end but not where to start. Not how to build but how to tear it apart." You know what there will be a happy ending but you have no idea how to get there. "I've got a way to work this out." -being realistic allows you to be pragmatic. |

| Green Day – Horseshoes and Handgrenades Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| does anyone else feel unsatisfied by Act III? I mean Act I had the story of Christian and Gloria meeting, their histories, and their status as a relationship, Act II had the story of how Christian struck and how the "enemy" reacted by attacking Gloria's beliefs. Act III just leaves me hanging for an ending. | |

I agree with the misery comment. As for the story, an idea. There seem to be three main points of view in this album: Christian, Gloria, but also their enemy, religion, politics, culture, whomever you want to call it. They speak during Peacemaker after Christians extreme rebellion with religion in East Jesus Nowhere. In this song, they react by getting rid of Christian's lover, Gloria (Death to the lover that you were dreaming of, I'm going to send you back to the place where it all began). How do they do this? They go for her at the best time after she has second thoughts in Murder City as seen in Viva la Gloria [little girl]. They try to bring her back to their side. This causes Gloria to be divided and her own worst enemy in Restless Heart Syndrome. Just an interpretation. |
