Basically to me this a narrator singing about a bisexual girl who he's lusting over but manages to get caught up in her relationship drama about trying to 'decide' between dating men and women, especially since she's trying to remain closeted about the fact. Someone previously mentioned the line that 'A girl who can't decide/And here's the reason why - girls love girls and boys,' effectively stating that there is no way she /can/ actually decide, because she's attracted to both, which I think is super important to this song. And the one other thing that I don't think anyone has touched on is 'love is not a choice.' This is a phrase that lots of people use when defending non-heterosexual identities, like 'born this way,' but it holds another connotation for those who don't identify as monosexual. For these people, love shouldn't be about trying to choose a partner that only satisfies part of their sexual urges (a consequence of monogamy) and disregarding the other parts of their identity that also need attention and that wouldn't be satisfied in monogamous relationships. In fact, this whole song shows that the girl is never happy with just one or the other, because she is forced to choose, and she simply can't. I think that the line is a more forceful way of saying 'love shouldn't be a choice (between genders, in this case)' - as in, you shouldn't have to pick one and be defined by it just to make other people happy. |

I definitely think you guys are right - this is about a person who is completely neglected from their family life, and so turns to anything they can to get attention - school, rumors, cutting, whatever they can. And while they hate it - they keep putting themselves down with phrases like 'so unprofessional,' 'nothing exceptional,' 'you're nothing if you're just another' - it's the only way they feel like they're doing something right with themselves ('this is correctional.') The sad thing about this song is that this person obviously has had no one to hold on to and sees themselves as completely worthless and screwed up. The chorus is absolutely heartrending. 'Mirror on the wall Frame the picture. Reflect this kiss to wish us all Goodnight.' The only picture the mirror can reflect when you're looking into it is your own face. So the 'frame the picture' is almost a bitter jibe at this person's own self esteem, which is found in various places throughout the rest of the song. And the fact is that this person is looking at themselves in a mirror, pretending to kiss themselves goodnight because no one else will ever do it for them. It's a beautiful and breathtaking picture that makes you want to rip yourself up and cry. |

See, that entire second verse to me paints a very vivid picture - some girls wandering around late at night, trying to find a way to live in a small town, when all of a sudden out of nowhere they are blinded (white out) by 'two lights shining on a dead end' - or a pair of headlights from a car. 'Drawn out like circles trailing off the pavement' just gives me that white chalk feeling, like the girls' bodies where traced after they died when the car hit them. Y/N? |
