I think this songs about resisting falling back into old relationships. Throughout the album clean seems to symbolize not having sex, white virginity, and black the absence of virginity so thus "black and low" is like having dirty sex. "Its a trial to leave you clean" is saying its hard to walk away from you and not sleep with you. Its all about repeating a pattern of sleeping with someone. hence "again, again.. again" |

I agree with it being about meaningless sex. But since Davey doesn't drink that's why it says "safe to say you won't recall" instead of we the first time. I think he's asking if the girl questioned he actions and thought about what people would think of her. aka if she thought she was a whore. i think "dancing with strangers" is sleeping with different people who feel like strangers since they don't know the real you |
