Down – Lysergik Funeral Procession Lyrics 11 years ago
Anyone know all the spoken lyrics at the beginning of the song? I know the end of the spoken part...
A foot on the back of the neck
pushing you through a mile of rock and soil
to your prestigious destination

Pantera – 10's Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm tired of seeing people blaming Phil for Dime's death.

You cannot blame Dime's death on Phil. Even if Phil mentioned in a video that he felt he was responsible for Dime's death, it doesn't make his opinion a fact. You can blame two things for Dime's death:
1. a very deranged man named Nathan Gale
and
2. the venue security for letting him slip in with a gun

I nor anyone else except the members of Pantera will ever know the whole truth concerning the breakup of Pantera, but I'm pretty sure that Phil was not the only one responsible for the band's demise. Plus, who's to say that Nathan Gale or some other waste of skin wouldn't have tried something similar at a Pantera concert later on. Hell, the guy that shot John Lennin told him that he was a big fan! Nathan Gale was OBSESSED with Pantera and was quoted as saying that Pantera stole his lyrics. Sounds to me like Nathan Gale and Pantera could possibly have had a collision course sometime down the road if Pantera stayed together. Either way, Dime's death can't all be pinned on Phil. He didn't twist Dime and Vinnie's arms to form Damageplan or to play at the Alrosa Villa. Four other people died that day and I'm almost certain that none of their families blame Phil for the victim's deaths.

Blame Nathan Gale.
Blame Nathan Gale's mother for buying him a gun.
Blame the security at the Alrosa Villa.
Don't blame Phil.

Pantera – 13 Steps To Nowhere Lyrics 14 years ago
I never made the connection before reading the replies here, but the 13th step is most likely a reference to relapsing.

"Whores" is most likely referencing anyone who sells out for fame, money or changes their opinion or what they believe to suit whatever is popular at the moment.

"Your windows boarded up" - You try to keep your private life private or you are reclusive/withdrawn

"Your private lives exposed" - You can't go out into public without the media breathing down your neck OR, the media gets wind of your problems and blows them out of proportion just to sell their worthless magazines

"The talk shows pump it up....Lab rats diseased for show" - I've always connected this with the people that will pretty much sell their souls for some free airfare and cash to be on a talk show like Jerry Springer where they will half-assed act like a rapist or someone who is in love with their brother or sister or something like that.

"We're doomed to use the slang" - This could be commentary on how quickly some slang is picked up and used just because someone popular uses it in their music. Otherwise, I have no idea.

"Outbreak of drug roulette" - I have no idea what this means other than people dieing from overdosing on drugs

"A church burned to the ground...Not even noticed yet" - The media vomits up bullshit about who's gettin married, who's fucking who, who's gettin divorced and who's gettin the kids to the point that they are missing things that they should really be concerned with. (A good example of this is that a few years ago, you couldn't watch a news show or open up an aol/yahoo/etc. webpage without seeing some bullshit about Paris Hilton. It was literally sickening! Who really gives a fuck!!)

This song has so many cryptic lyrics.....it most likely goes on to comment about racial crime, overzealous racists and who knows...maybe your fucking house was built on an Indian burial ground! I have no idea.

I think this song covers addiction, people who whore themselves out for money and or fame, racism, media bullshit, ignorance from blind faith and skeletons in the closet. I don't focus too much on the lyrics when listening to this song. I just enjoy it for it's badass drum beats and the way that Phil sings it.

Pantera – Where You Come From Lyrics 14 years ago
This is, I think, the 5th version of the lyrics for this song that I have seen posted across the internet. I don't think the true lyrics were or ever will be posted.

I have seen "Can't break from my disguise" posted as "Can't kill the bad disguise" and "Can't kill the bastard skies." Also, it's hard to hear, but after he says "It's where you come from", he says "The South." He says it very deep and low so it's almost lost in the guitar riff.

At the end of the song when he is repeating "It's where you come from" it sounds to me like he isn't repeating the same lyrics over and over. It sounds like the 2nd "It's where you come from" is actually "It's where you end up" or something very close to it. The 4th repeat does not sound like "It's where you come from" but at that point he is screaming very close to the microphone and I can't tell what he is saying.

To me, this song does deal with addiction, but may also deal with the shit he did while under the influence of weed, whiskey and who knows what else. The lyric where he says that "I fell in from of my friends...I dropped out in front of the world...You call that supernatural...It ain't" most likely talks about one or all of the times he died (I think he died at least twice). He was interviewed by these two assholes before a concert while he was touring with Superjoint Ritual. He mentioned that he has died before and that there was no light and he saw no angels or anything else that would hint at an afterlife.

When he says "It's where you come from" I'm pretty sure he is talking about his alcoholic father and how he was treated by him as well as the way that it has affected his life. His father was a bar owner so he probably saw people getting shit faced and doing stupid shit all the time.

"Black wings will weather your flight" - The Crow? (I seriously don't know what this lyric means, probably a vague reference to death)

"For some there's no second time" - He may be talking about a friend of his that died from a heroin overdose

"Following paths of your life" - He is probably talking about making good and bad decisions

"I stepped off the mountain to sky" - This lyric is either talking about dieing or the euphoric feeling you get after you shoot up with heroin

Overall, this is a badass song! This is one of my favorite songs from Pantera. This has some really awesome guitar work that makes me feel like learning how to play guitar so I can play this song really gritty and really loud. It's sad to think that there won't be anymore badassnes of this magnitude from these guys.

This song has a badass guitar solo. I would like to hear a band cover this song and sing it in the same style as Phil.

I agree with this being one of the best rock instrumentals of all time. Sometimes, this song reminds me of the Star Wars cantina scene with the aliens playing their weird instruments.

Down – Beautifully Depressed Lyrics 16 years ago
If you buy the cd, it it lists this song as a single off of the album. The radio stations in my area do not play Down, so I didn't know about it at the time. Nowdays, I do not listen to mainstream radio unless it is classic rock.

I don't think this song has anything to do with being depressed, I think there is a deeper meaning. Being inebriated, I have no business giving my opinion on what that meaning is. Rock on...

Down – Ghosts Along The Mississippi Lyrics 16 years ago
This is the song that got me into Down. I downloaded it after remembering that Down was a side project of Phil's and wanting to see what they sounded like. I downloaded this song solely because of it's name and one other, can't remember which one now, but I really got into this song. I jammed it for a while and eventually it got lost amongst a sea of downloaded music as I was getting into other music. I found it over a year later, jammed it again and not too long after that I was jamming the entire Down II album repeatedly in my car.

I also love the story of how Down II was conceived. It reminds me of how Lynnyrd Skynnyrd jammed together in an old building that they called "Hell House."

As for what the song means, it well could mean beating addiction or any other problem that was keeping Phil from moving forward in his endeavors. I'm leaning towards addiction on this one, though.

Down – Lifer Lyrics 16 years ago
These lyrics are more complete than the other version with the exception of the word "image" missing from the end of "and through its frozen."

Awesome song. Very powerful from both a musical and lyrical standpoint.

Many of the songs on Down II were inspired by weed, and I have a feeling this one is no different. He could be saying that he is smoking weed regardless of what it is doing to his health and that he is a "lifer" and will not stop using it.

He mentions "standing way on the other side" and "no doubts about my philosophy" which can be interpreted as him staying true to his character and beliefs and not selling out or taking the easy way out.

Down – Lies, I Don't Know What They Say But... Lyrics 16 years ago
This is one of my favorite Down songs. Most of the song has a Black Sabbath feel to it. I also love the bass line.

I think Barry pretty much nailed it. Phil is talking about the media and others making quick character judgments based on very little or "taken out of context" information. He is most likely saying that no matter what he says or does, the media will always take shots at him with bogus info and other types of slander because people will eat it up.

Sounds to me like he is telling people to not judge a book by its cover, get to know the real person before you judge them...."walk a mile in their shoes" kinda thing.

Down – Beneath the Tides Lyrics 16 years ago
To me this song is about the experiences of those who lived thru the aftermath of Katrina and the lack of government help.

The lyrics "You can't come clean beneath the tides of the washout" could be translated as the government having the blood of NOLA's dead on it's hands OR the fact that after a catastrophe like Katrina, or any other for that matter where you have lost pretty much everything, it is very hard to put away one's vices. It also could mean that for anyone that lived thru Katrina and the aftermath will not soon forget it.

The guitar and drum combo in this song reminds me of Led Zeppelin's When the Levee Breaks.

Down – Stained Glass Cross Lyrics 16 years ago
Blabbermouth.net or the actual Down website, I can't remember which, had an interview with Phil posted where he talked about the meanings of the songs on the Down II album.

He said that the song "Stained Glass Cross" was about a promise made between a father and son. The promise was obviously that whoever survived the other in death would hang a stained glass cross over the casket or the grave.

I really like this song, mostly because of the electric organ. Makes me wonder if this song was also their way of paying homage to Deep Purple or any other of their favorite bands from the 70's that liked to use the electric organ.
