Lana Del Rey – Blue Jeans Lyrics 14 years ago
There is no line that would make one believe that it was drugs, except gangster, which is much more general. There is really no line that says he went to prison, which two people have suggested. He disappeared after one day. So... maybe he was just ditching her? Maybe prison? Maybe he got rich and never came back? We don't know, the song's protagonist doesn't know.

The rest of this I agree with.

I wish the line wasn't "I'll wait a million years" but was, "Probably a million years." Some people I know think it is.

I will love you till the end of time
probably a million years.

fits the naive/flippant LDR character. imo

yeah it sounds exactly like piazza new york catcher by belle and sebastion. I was looking the lyrics up to see if it was really a cover of something. the lyrics feel familiar too.

Emmy the Great – We Almost Had a Baby Lyrics 14 years ago
This above is missing a few lines.

"Well, I am a woman
you know I'm a woman
But before I met you
I was only a kid.
You know there were moments
when you thought you would rape me
you wanted to take me
So you did."

Maybe you're hearing "rape me" as "break me" in that line. Either way, I think you need to retract saying the lines are clear.

You said: "I think it's quite clear that the line "well, you didn't stop/when I told you to stop" just describes how they had unprotected sex and how they tried to avoid pregnancy by not having him come inside of her."

You are extrapolating a very complex scene from the line "you didn't stop when I told you to stop." And I think you are wrong. That line is not clear in the way you interpret it. There is no talk about protection, there is no talk about the spilling of seed. Why would a simple mistake of not pulling out, as you interpret, make her a woman? Change her from a baby to a woman?

"no means no" is a very common phrase. Stop means stop. In most other contexts would refer to rape. And even in your supposed scenario, "It's not rape, she just told him to stop screwing her because she knew he was about to come." Well if she said stop, and he didn't, then that is rape, bro.

Statistical research on the subject often find one in four girls is raped in their lifetime. I've also seen one in five.

http://aspiringeconomist.com/index.php/2009/09/11/rape-statistics-1-in-4/

There is one article on the matter. There are more.

The thought that she was unaware of the connotations and associations she was messing with, seems absurd. I find it unlikely one writes a song that a significant portion of people say, "Hey that's about date rape." and then one keeps it as is, and says, screw it if people think my boyfriend raped me.

As pointed out by others, this alludes to a specific person she dated. If this isn't about rape, she's an asshole because people know who this is about.

Here is a review of the album that also mentions that the song is about rape.

That the song is clear, seems a stretch of the imagination given the evidence. It's a poem, it's open to interpretation, you can read into a line any way you wish to muster. This is mostly to point out that people are confused.

Johnny Flynn – Leftovers Lyrics 15 years ago
There is absolutely no reason to believe that he is not being sincere in the lyrics. The song is up tempo.

The entire album is about how awesome it is to be a vagabond.

It opens with:

"Show me the way to the rubbish dump or the bins at closing time
I've walked a mile just to catch a smile from a fish without its brine"

When you are hungry this stuff actually sounds good. And that's what he's saying. Joyfully. He lives a care free life.

The following is funny:

"I said "bring your dark eyes honey"
She said "you bring yours"
Said I don't take second glances
As she walked out the door"

You bring your dark eyes is a come on. And she teases him back, you bring yours. He says, lazy/sarcastically, I don't take second glances. meaning he's already seen her, he knows he likes her and with that she bolts.

"I walked after her and waved her down
And asked her why she left
She said she only dealt leftovers
And that all else felt like theft"

She has taken the sarcasm in a very literal direction to create the funny. He doesn't take second glances, he said. But she's the queen of the rubish dump, that's all she takes. She only deals in left overs.

And the final line is him teasing other suitors. basically she's crazy, "Her heart is ruled by forces off the maps."

I don't know, this seems totally carefree to me. He will find another girl.

I believe there is an interview somewhere where he talks specifically about this song but I can't find it. Here is a long interview about how funny the songs are: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/audio/2008/may/30/music.extra.flynn

And an npr interview:

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth Lyrics 16 years ago
http://www.popmatters.com/music/interviews/clap-your-hands-say-yeah-060602.shtml

One of the tunes off the album, "Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth," about the experience of tackling New York City as an outsider, seems very autobiographical.

"For that one in particular, I pieced together a couple of my own experiences about how it feels to be displaced, but I projected that on to someone else's story that I knew that moved to New York."

I think that clears up most of the guesses and confusions. And points to more literal interpretations of their other songs as well. Though the, this album is all about rock history, guy has some interesting thought experiments. I don't think the songs really support that interpretation.

yeah, it was mentioned in a review that he went to a club that wouldn't let people in unless they were pretty or famous and they called it face control.

Sunset Rubdown – You Go On Ahead (Trumpet, Trumpet II) Lyrics 16 years ago
"see the sirens and the lizards lick their tongues BEHIND THE STAGE"

should be:

see the sirens and the lizards FLICK their tongues behind the stage

Here are the lyrics compiled with minor edits:

you go on ahead, for awhile
I would like to follow you awhile
you go on ahead for awhile
I would like to just follow you awhile

and I'd like to watch the white flash of your heels as they take turns breaking the desert heat to beckon me in languages I've never learned
and I'd like to have you navigate two hills where no musicians live and on the way decide what bendings of your will you're willing to forgive

and I'd like to think the actors never abandoned
and I'd like to throw this trumpet down and go on empty handed
and I'd like to think I am not one of them but I know I am
so I'd like to just follow you awhile
and sing "you go on ahead for awhile"
I would like to just follow you awhile
you go on ahead for awhile
I would like to just follw you awhile

when me and the boys were out
we killed a thousand butterflies
so I put their wings into my mouth and said a prayer for our safe arrival
and then a big black car crossed our path
and I wondered whether or not that ??? was empty
you go

oh oh oh oh ohhhhhh

see the sirens and the lizards flick their tongues behind the stage
see the actor keep it ritual to keep them all at bay
he would like to come home naked without war paint on his face
and the appear before you, virgin white if virgin's are still chaste

so when you've got to wait
and you've got to wait (x4)
and you've got to wait for me

and I'll appear before you virgin white if virgin's are still chaste
then I'd like to just follow you awhile

and if there are two eyes in my head there are four season in a year
and reflections on the water of a burning yellow sphere
and the days add up to weeks add up to months
and add up
and add up
and add up
add up
and add up
and add up

and if there are two eyes in my head there are four season in a year
and reflections on the water of a burning yellow sphere
and the days add up to weeks add up to months and add up
and add up to years

add up to years
and add yo to years
add up to years
and add up ohhh

and if reflections on the water sometimes look like burning tears
we can watch them change in shape without pushing off the pier
