Spandau Ballet – Gold Lyrics 16 years ago
Just saw this site and was slightly surprised that none of you got the meaning of this song!

This isn't a British website is it?!

It's about Thatcherism. For background, Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister of the UK in 1979 and Tony Hadley, the lead singer of Spandau Ballet is a very big and well known supporter of her policies.

The song was released in 1983, around the time of her landslide re-election when the British economy was starting to grow very quickly based on entirely new forms of business. The message of Thatcherism was free-market opportunity and that anyone could make something of themselves if they wanted to and if government got out the way and let them do it. Also, this was one year after the Falklands War and two years after the economy had hit rock bottom following government policies in the 1970s.

The way supporters of Thatcherism saw it, they had been held back for years and now, with strong leadership, they could go anywhere and do anything.

Now, bearing all that in mind, re-read the lyrics and you'll see what I mean!
