The lyrics are wrong... It's not "everybody hopes and waits, I can't believe" it's "everybody hurts, in ways, I can't believe" You can clearly hear the "rts" on the end of the word "hurts" so I don't see why there is confusion... |

After watching this video, I think this song is about Beth Gibbon's musical career. I seem to remember reading that she came from rather modest upbringings and so becoming a successful musician (her "fantasy") and it's "uncertainty" is causing problems for her. |

What came to my mind when I read the lyrics was that the song was about the 'American Dream' and how suburbia is not what it's cracked up to be. |

It seems to me that its about loving someone but being afraid of what others think. She claims "they don't love me/they can go to hell" because she realises that true love is more important than the shallow day to day connections you have with people you deep down, don't particularly like. |

I think the verses mimic the lullaby Hush Little Baby because in the chorus whoever she is referring to "wants it" again and again much like how the baby being spoken to in that lullaby is never satisfied and constantly wants more and more. |

I think this song is retrospective. She is remembering when she was younger and she admired a girl called Sarah because she is indifferent and cool. But now she is older she has realised that it was silly; the lyrics "tarmac of the melting motorway" suggests Sarah has died in an accident and it was because she was too "cool" to care for speed limits, or something. The tone of the chorus suggests she is mocking her former self when she admired Sarah but now realises that her very coolness caused her death. |
