Interesting aside dept: Zevon "samples" pianist Floyd Cramer's 1960 hit "Last Date" on this song. This is the source of the irony between the music and lyrics. Although Cramer was critically acclaimed and did studio work with many huge stars (including piano on "Heartbreak Hotel"), he is virtually unknown outside of the music industry. What else? Cramer died in 1997 of...lung cancer. |

Seems like a song that should have been written with Steve Goodman. Reminds me of childhood Sundays spent watching football. Ads for life insurance, car batteries, tires, and...beer. I can still see the guys on the boat in the Schlitz ad. Makes me yearn for a German afternoon. |

JP wrote this song on his 30th birthday after breaking a fanbelt in his car. At the time I was a boy and now I'm a middle-aged man. This past weekend my wife unloaded some items from my parents house, which is being sold as they have both passed. After she went to bed I had some beers and looked at old photo albums. My childhood home seemed so much smaller than I remembered and each picture brought a flood of memories. Were my parents ever that young? If I could do it over would I do things differently? Absolutely. Would I trade any of my memories? Absolutely not. Those are the feelings exhibited in this song. Lucky to get out of Maywood? More like just plain lucky. |
