| New Mexico is the scissors, Arizona the paper, and California the rock. Drunk and angry, New Mexico takes it out on Arizona for cheating on him, even though he knows she's going. She runs to California for protection, and he leaves poor New Mexico beaten, broken, and alone. It's all right there in the lines... | |

This song really rings a bell. The lyrics reflect the thoughts of a man who secretly wants to end a relationship because it is progressing out of the honeymoon period and he is getting cold feet ("is it too late to call this off?"). He is indecisive. In this situation of indecision, you want the other person to confirm your doubts so you can feel like you aren't the asshole who is breaking their heart. This is obvious in the chorus question ("wouldn't that be better?"). It would make life easier if we just slipped away and forgot about it rather than struggle and see if it works. He wants to take the easy way out but he's scared to tell her ("I tried my best to hide in the crowded room"). The third verse is beautiful and pays it all off. The "waves" are obviously tears, and he can see that she would clearly be devastated if he broke up with her. So he convinces himself to stay by saying "I'll try hard. I'll try always" and just keeps going along with it, hoping she'll eventually feel the way he does, as the song repeats with the emphasis on her. |

Actually, "We're and American Band" is on I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One, which came out 3 years before this album. Yes, "Pass the Hatchet" came out 10 years later, but all serpentinepad was commenting on was the evolution of YLT's sound. They use heavy feedback on lots of songs, from the day they started continuing on today, and sometimes it gets pretty wild, but that's why we like YLT, isn't it? Don't criticize someone for knowing "nothing" when you don't have your facts straight. Personally, I like the distortion on this song, but it does get a little much for some people's ears. I had a friend's parent actually tell me to "turn down the heavy metal" once while we were listening to this song. Ridiculous. I also agree with herminio on the line between 2nd and 3rd strophes. As least the "...swingers on the move" sounds right |

the character of the song is in the beginning of a new relationship (the first verse). She's getting carried away and thinks it might be something big. However, she's been damaged by too many bad relationships in the past ("broken hearts/forgettable false starts") and is wary of jumping into this one ("It's times like these I think too much/please don't think too much"). She tries to talk herself out of it, but she's hooked ("This all fits together but it's not what you think/Oh there I go again"). She sees something different in this person. It seems to her like they understand her ("but you're listening to every word I say and I'm trying not to give it all away"). In the end she decided to go out on a ledge, to take the risk. She trusts this person but fears he may give up on her or hurt her like many have in the past ("You can have 'em right now but you better not look away/this is me trying to be brave"). It's so common that we get caught up too quickly in relationships and open up only to have the door slammed in our face. I think this one might work... |
