Pretty much Death Cab for Cutie is saying that he will always be there for his girlfriend no matter what. He is hers for life and for whatever uncertainty comes next. Ben is not religious because when he was a child, he didn't believe that people were supposed to fear God as they told him in his catholic school. So he doesn't believe in the idea of God at all and leaves his faith. So he believes that after life is just darkness. Not heaven, not hell. Just darkness.
