The Beautiful South – 36D Lyrics 15 years ago
If it's any consolation, in the music video for this song it's the woman who sings the line about cheapening every woman in the land to one of the rugby players.

Switchfoot – Faust, Midas, and Myself Lyrics 16 years ago
I guess the themes of this song have pretty much been covered, I don't think I have anything I can add to that so I'll just comment on the musical side and how it fits in with the lyrics.

The instrumentation in this song is brilliant and fits in perfectly with the story. I'll mention a few points where this is the case.

In the first verse it has a sort of calm feel to begin with, then a slightly uneasy and creepy atmosphere at 'crooked smile' when things start to seem a bit dark and mysterious. It then reverts back to the same as before as the old man starts to deciieve and tempt.
"You've one life left to leave" - Just as I'm going through the song I'm thinking that this is the temptation the old man is offering. We have one life left to leave. We might as well make the most of it and do and have what we want.
The next verse is the consequence of this choice of lifestyle. He has everything he wants and all he wishes for yet there is still something missing. It all seems so empty and superficial. He listens to the persuasion of the old man and everything is golden and perfect but at the same time lacking and unfulfilling. The music captures this mood perfectly.
"What direction, what direction..." The mood changes to one of panic and confusion and poses the question of how we decide to live our lives and if this is the result of the old man's attitude to life, then was it really the wisest descision? The harmonics and guitaring in this section create a more upbeat and pressing atmosphere which leads into the next verse.

The next verse has a much quicker feeling rythm and the constant drum beat builds up the newfound tension and panic of this golden world. The music throughout this verse really gives the feeling of adrenaline pumping and heart beating faster as there seems to be no escape to this world. This builds up to the central line "A heart that's made of gold can't really beat at all..." the realization has struck that a life full of superficiality isn't really life at all. The dreamer sees all this and longs to return to normal and to wake up again.
The question is posed again over and over: "What direction?" and slowly builds up to the realized answer: "Life begins at the intersection"
The dreamer has found that what seems physically appealing has no true meaning and does not give the life he desires. The intersection; where Man meets God is where life begins.

A quiet atmoshpher returns in contrast to the noise and panic of the dream which encapsulates a feeling of waking up and returning to normality. "My heart beat once or twice, LIFE flooded my veins" The normal routine was now everyhing he could ever need and "the perfect joy".

Interestingly there is a change in the lyrics of the very last part: "You've one life left to lead"
The focus has changed here from the idea of living life for oneself as we only have one life and then we die, to we are here for a reason, let's make the wise descision and chase the things worth chasing and live the life worth living.

Switchfoot – Evergreen Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is about consistency. The way we live our lives when no one's watching. How we should strive to live our life to the same fullness all the year round just like the trees whose leaves never die.
Switchfoot sing a lot about entropy: the law of this world which states that everything falls to a lower state of matter; the second law of thermodynamics. "Everything dies", leaves fall, flowers wither, but our lives should shine through to others all year round and not grow faint.

It also has the idea of coming home from a holiday or returning to normal life from a spiritual high. "Holiday end, I'm here once again and I'm left alone on the bus with my head on the ground"

Great song.

I want to be evergreen.
