Jon Foreman – Learning How To Die Lyrics 16 years ago
Dmedina, I really like your interpretation of this song, and I agree with it. I looked at this as two friends having a conversation. The girl is worried that the guy will die without Christ. I’m in a relationship right now with a non-believer so I pretty much am thinking the first verse every day.

The guy is agnostic and doesn’t believe in what comes after death. And her response is her testimony pretty much: that she tried to do life without God before and survive all on her own. She was selfish- looking out for herself only. Pursuing success for HERSELF, concerned with HER health, HER happiness. But she was just dying slowly because she didn’t live in God where you live selflessly and love others like God loves us. And that is where I differ a bit on your interpretation. Yes, choosing Christ is all about “life after death” but it’s also about truly living on earth. 2 Corinthians 5:17- “the old has passed away. The new is come!” We are new creations or “born again” when he receive Christ.

Amazing song with a heartbreaking message about those who are lost and we desperately need to reach before they perish.

I think it is a coincidence but actually Jon Foreman is an informed reader. I've heard him on interviews and several of his songs are inspired by other people's work: philosophers, novelists, and poets alike.

Jon Foreman – The Cure For Pain Lyrics 16 years ago
Lacerhuffy and sungis hit the nail on the head. I’ve been a fan of this song for some time but only now realized the depth in the lyrics. If you think about it, no matter how much we have suffered in life, God has it a trillion times worse (literally). Every last one of the humans he created have rejected him at one time or another and some on a second-by-second basis. No human has the strength to withstand that kind of pain.

I don’t think the first two verses are about pain at all actually though it appears so. I think they are about God’s grace that is “falling from the sky”. Pain does not come from the sky; pain is of the world.

He says “I've spent ten years singing gravity away”. Gravity is a metaphor for God. God created gravity after all and He is what keeps us grounded. That’s how I read it at least.

“Why broken cisterns never could stay filled” means we are broken people and we can be filled by God but every time we falter in our faith, we spill a little of our hope, peace, joy, and love, you know?

“And here tonight while the stars are blacking out” and the next line- he means at night time when we are all alone in our bed before we go to sleep, instead of praying to God we are worried about what the future holds. The future is in His hands; we have no say in it so why worry?

I love the phrase “fools behind the reigns”. I almost got a double meaning in the word “reigns”. I think he means we live like we have control like a man on a horse pulling on the “reins” and we forget God is the one with complete control, the one who “reigns” over all creation.

And of course “It would be a lie to run away” because we are made by God to love God and once we realize that, we just can’t turn back from Him. We may stray or stumble, but God will forgive us and restore us every single time!

I’m still not sure what he meant by “blood is fire” though. Unless he means the blood of Christ maybe? It fuels us to keep living. Not positive on that interpretation.

And james fetner and Joshcuba, Switchfoot IS Jon Foreman. If you don’t like the music, that’s one thing. But the lyrics are by the same man so the heart, the voice is the same if not the music that may not be for everyone. For me, any music that worships God is good music :)
