This song is about the complications that arise in a relationship through time. He uses the metaphor of the birth of the atlantic ocean to symbolize this separating of him from his love. Whether the separation is due to actual space or just the complications that arise in a relationship, he now feels that something is keeping him from her. "I felt it less like a lake and more like a moat". At first it was just a huge distance, like a lake or ocean, but he makes it more specific to show that it's something trapping him in or her out. It's really such a beautiful song. I think so many people can identify with the line "I need you so much closer"; anybody who has a loved one who is too far away and who they can't see when they want to. |
