in the the daoist philosophy straw dogs were used for ceremonies and cherished beforehand; however, after the ceremony they were thrown away and destroyed. in my opinion, maybe theres a connection between someone living for instant gratification (like in the song) and something so praised and beautiful that only ends up being destroyed (like the straw dogs themselves). at least that makes sense to me. but im not sure how likely it is that this song holds daoist philosophies. |

the whole "racing thoughts" is a huge proponent of panic disorder. but what really convinces me is the "nursery rhyme" part. "i believe in medication and i believe in therapy and i believe in crystal light 'cause i believe in me yeah it's so uplifting fuck yeah"- minus the crystal light thing, this is almost identical to the mantra cognitive-behavioral therapy told me to repeat. most of the time you're told that you're capable, so believing you can accomplish things is a pretty big component... i guess. obviously this applies to a whole spectrum of disorders. i remember an interview once where Justin mentioned having a panic attack on stage, but i guess it could have been a one time thing. anyways, justin pierre writes beautiful things. not digging the third album as much though....and you can't even tell it's shawn harris on backround vocals in hello helicoptor! |

i'm glad someone else mentioned the whole "raping a girl" thing. i get the whole teen angst concept, but mine never involved rape. such a wide spectrum of song meanings from this to something like Waiting for the Bus. |
