That is seriously a great interpretation. I agree with you completely. The way you wrote it makes so much sense, I am just in awe at how well you worded it. (By the way, I think my response kind of sounds a bit sarcastic, so I want to say I am serious and I don't mean it to sound that way... just to make sure you know that.) |

In my own opinion, the meaning to this song doesn't really have a direct correlation with conformity but rather it can be applied to many different situations. 'The Night' and the 'Darkness' referred to in this song can be anything which may be looked down upon, be it something as extreme as murder or smaller, like breaking a promise. It seems that the singer may be switching perspectives throughout, as in the first verse he is speaking of how he is tempted to abandon something in his life for power, then as the song continues he is hovering on the desicion, still having doubts, but decides that he can only find out if it is the right thing one way. In the chorus, the singer may be speaking to that person in the first two verses, asking if he is going to ignore the fact that the singer is going to save him from his life and give him power or if he will 'give in to the night.' The perspective switches again, possibly to the first person that spoke or to a completely different person that is having the same issue. At the next switch, for the chorus, the singer is again asking if he will betray or forsake something/someone in life in exchange for the power that he craves. For example, the first person may be contemplating telling a secret of someone else's in exchange for something, such as money, and the person from the chorus could be bribing that first person for the secret. In the next verse, that could be the first person again, still unsure if they will benefit and what might go wrong, or it could be another person that the second person was also trying to bribe for something. It is also possible that the song is over a period of time and from the first verse, he has questioned doing this act for power. Although he is reluctant, he will go for that power. In the chorus, it is a time later in which he now is the one offering power to someone else. An example for this would be that, again, someone is bribing the singer for something and he decides that he will take the bribe. In time, he does the same thing to another person, and so on. These explanations may be completely wrong and have nothing to do with what the singer was actually attempting to portray, however. They are just possibilities. |
