| CHVRCHES – The Mother We Share Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| This song definitely makes me think of a relationship between two siblings with an emotionally abusive mother. The narrator is younger and considered the "good child" by their mother. Her older sibling, to whom the song is addressed, is taking the brunt of the abuse so that the younger does not have to deal with it. The narrator wants them to escape since they are now old enough to. She knows that the abuse will turn on her once her sibling leaves, but she wants to protect them. In the second verse, she covers for her sibling who is out late, even though she knows that she would have a much easier time of it if she told the truth. She would be much safer if her sibling stayed, as well, but she begs them to go and find their own life. | |

I'm probably completely off-base, but I get the impression that this is about a couple whom the general public doesn't like to see out together and thus stays home when they want to be together. "I can't seem to take you anywhere" "the rank and file shoot us dirty looks" "The night time here is a plastic box, gently amplified in the basement rock." Maybe they have a basement apartment? Wherever they are, they hear distant voices. Then the narrator says that "when you're not around, this is our sound." By this she may mean that when her significant other is not with her, she and her friends sound just like those distant voices. They're outside, at night, presumably having a good time. In the next verse, the couple goes out again, to a different square, and again has to leave their friends while the "rank and file" shoot them dirty looks. The narrator tells her SO to call a taxi since she doesn't want to walk back. That she has to ask implies that they could have walked home from where they were, but she preferred not to. The reason for that could be that she doesn't want to deal with more "dirty looks" or she feels those looks might escalate into something more dangerous. Or maybe she's just lazy; I don't know. Finally, "this is not a song, because there's nothing wrong when the light inside is not as bright." She wants to be outside with friends, where things are brighter, but she's stuck inside. Still, she reassures her SO that there's nothing wrong. It's not really their fault at all. As for why people don't want to see them together, there are a couple of potential reasons: 1) they're a lesbian or interracial couple in a repressed area 2) the SO has a very public negative reputation. or, 3) the SO actually behaves horribly in public, and the people shooting them dirty looks are completely justified. |

| I think it's about breaking up with someone because all the romance is gone... or something. | |
| Vanessa Carlton – Sway Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Either this song is using drug addiction as a metaphor for a relationship ("come down heavy," anyone?), or relationships as a metaphor for addiction. My money's on the last one. And, yeah, heffert, this song is totally underrated, even if we're all wrong and it's really about balloons and puppies invading Pluto. And that is very, very sad. | |

I think she's saying that she isn't that happy, but she still doesn't want people to worry about her. Walking on water is considered a miracle in a few religions, because It's generally regarded as something impossible (no duh). I think she's comparing holding on to walking on water; in other words, she's saying she can't hold on. This is one bitchin' song! |

I think it's about her watching a friend destroy his life, and knowing she could help him, but also knowing that part of the reason she feels that way is because he's pushing her aside for someone else. She don't want to get in the way of them and realize that changing things would be selfish, even though she thinks it would be better. He's got to make his own decisions, and right now, he's choosing to leave her behind for 'the devil.' Anyways, that's just what I think... |
