| The Gaslight Anthem – Bring It On Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| I meant to post that under Boxer... hehe. | |
| The Gaslight Anthem – Bring It On Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Great song indeed. I do believe it's "you found the bandages inside the band" though. | |
| The Gaslight Anthem – Old White Lincoln Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Saw them the other night, and instead of the "Bring a dollar with you, baby," line, he went with "You don't have to deal with the dealers. Let your boyfriend deal with the dealers. It only gets inconvenient, when you wanna get high alone." Stellar. The Hold Steady rules. | |
| The Gaslight Anthem – Here's Looking at You, Kid Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think that's because he's telling the truth in that verse. | |
| Cobra Skulls – The Cobra And The Man Whore Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Oh, oh, oh... and an adulterer. | |
| Cobra Skulls – The Cobra And The Man Whore Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This song is based on the true life happenings of the evangelical preacher Theodore Haggard. Quite a comical scenario. A gay-hating preacher who is actually a homosexual himself. And a meth-head. You can't write this stuff. | |
| Cobra Skulls – Timing Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Correction: "Your silence was just a slight." Just a song about a promising romance that can't blossom due to factors in the two peoples' lives that won't allow them to "synch up", so to speak. There's some moving away and moving back happening. |
| Cobra Skulls – Exponential Times Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song is on the topic of governments using natural resources as an excuse for war. "Water is the next thing taken for granted to be on a wanted list. To fuel the battle..." |
| Chuck Ragan – Congratulations Joe Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This is a cool song that Chuck Ragan wrote for his father-inlaw when he retired. The title says it all. | |
| The Suicide Machines – Capitalist Suicide Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Free-market trade will destroy itself and they way that we live will cease to exist." Got that first line VERY wrong... "All that we know will come crashing down, as the Wall Street's bottom drops out now." Very prophetic indeed. |
| The Suicide Machines – So Long Lyrics | 16 years ago |
The words at the beginning: Because you never quite had the guts, To tell me how you feel, To show me something that's real, To show me what's inside, The truth you never hide." |
| Lucero – Smoke Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I've listened to this song about 15 times in the last couple days. It may just be my favourite Lucero song. It's easily in the top five. I'm talking "Chain Link Fence" territory. I was hoping that the new tunes would be good, and this one is just awesome. It's a theme they've hit on before, but they've never pulled off a "running away" song quite like this. Classic Lucero. | |
| Lagwagon – Mr. Coffee Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| There's the Descendents influence coming out in full force. | |
| Unwritten Law – Before I Go Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Yeah, this song it totally about breaking up with your boyfriend. Dig deep, sister. |
| Sundowner – Midsummer Classic Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I always thought that "my geography will bend" referred to travelling of some kind. | |
| Frank Turner – Reasons Not To Be An Idiot Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| BAHAHAHA! LAMA! That's just stupid. | |
| Stray Bullets – Bender Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This song just makes me think... "been there." Haha. | |
| Lucero – Hold Fast Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Now hold fast, fingers, Don't let her slip away. Hold fast 'cause you need her, to get the ship back to the bay." The sailboat symbolizes him and his life. The rope is his girl's love. He is in a tumultuous period of his life, which is symbolized by a storm or some kind of impending shipwreck. Opposing forces - the water and the elements - are his life situations that are challenging him to keep his grip on the rope. If he releases the rope, the sail will come down and he won't get the ship back to the calm of the bay (his life won't return to normalcy and happiness). The song is saying that her love is something he can cling to that will pull him through the bad times. She is the sail on his boast in the sea of his life, basically. Maritime metaphors are fun :) |

| Lucero – Old Sad Songs Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Awesome tune. Then it rips right into Chain Link Fence. Love it. | |
| Against Me! – Pretty Girls (The Mover) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"You wouldn't think something like irresponibility could complicate something like asking for some company." This song is DEFINITELY about a guy who has an STD and how he is coping with it and with his new love interest. It's blatantly obvious to me. I actually can't believe there is so much debate. But it's open to interpretation, as any song is, I suppose. |
| Screeching Weasel – Veronica Hates Me Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I played this song for a friend once, he'd never heard it. Turns out that he secretly referred to his truck as "Veronica". At the time, his truck was broken down and useless. He couldn't get her running. He couldn't help but laugh when he heard the chorus "Veronica hates me!". | |
| Tom Gabel – Cowards Sing at Night Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Bingo. | |
| Tom Gabel – Amputations Lyrics | 16 years ago |
If by "missing a part of himself" you mean literally missing a limb, you'd be correct. The song is about young soldiers missing out on the things that normal kids get to experience. Being denied certain rites of passage. Like dancing, partying, and young love. There's none of that in "the desert" (the war zone). It's saying, "doesn't everyone deserve these things?" The "amputations" part is quite literal though. Instead of experiencing those special things, the kids go to war and some come back with no legs, or no arms, or both. A pretty rough deal. The last part just touches on the self-perpetuating nature or war. |

| Cobra Skulls – Don't Count Your Cobras Before They Hatch Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This song is just too difficult to interpret. I won't even try. | |
| Lagwagon – The Chemist (Acoustic) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Yeah this song was written before he killed himself. There were some lyrical changes made I think. The original is on the Live in a Dive record. | |
| Bad Astronaut – If I Had A Son Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song is Joey's advice to his son (if he had a son - I think he actually does now). I think it's saying that it's important to build strong relationships with people that you know you can depend on. Also to be kind to, and thoughtful of, others. If they cast you out, don't waste time on them, because they are not going to reciprocate your friendship. Still, be kind to them; humble them. But focus your energy on strong relationships with those who will lend you support, as you would to them, when needed. Or something to that effect... |
| Bad Astronaut – Minus Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I've always thought this was written about his daughter. It's about the world that his generation is leaving for the next, and the subsequent/predestined misfortune that his daughter will endure because of their actions/inaction. | |
| Bad Astronaut – Autocare Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I remember a blog or website posting by Joey Cape before this album came out, and he said that the words for this song were written by Derrick Plourde. They were in a book of poetry that he had been writing in. I can't recall the exact situation, but I think Derrick's mom gave the book to Joey after Derrick passed away, and he felt compelled to somehow use these particular lyrics on the album somehow. The music was composed afterward to go with Derrick's words. As for the meaning of the song, "This Vehicle" is a metaphor for Derrick's self. It's a poem he wrote about the difficulties in his life that ultimately led to his demise. An appropriate inclusion for the album. At face value, it's not the greatest song. But I have a greater amount of appreciation for it, knowing the background behind it. |

| The Gaslight Anthem – Meet Me by the River's Edge Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Yeah this song is rife with Springsteen references. "No surrender my Bobby Jean." That is a line in the song that is simply to sequential song titles from "Born in the USA" |
| The Gaslight Anthem – Film Noir Lyrics | 16 years ago |
It's "I lost so much blood in the falling out." Favourite line: "Your sugar and spice, and everything nice. You got Monroe hips, your poison lips, and knives. Open wounds and a young boy's pride." Can't go wrong evoking some Marilyn Monroe imagery. |
| The Gaslight Anthem – High Lonesome Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Another reference in this song is to Tom Petty's "Southern Accents", playing on the radio. I had never really picked up on the theme of suicide. I guess I never really listened to this song closely enough. I definitely love the reference to "'Round Here" though. |
| The Gaslight Anthem – The '59 Sound Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I think this is just a song about a friend dying in a car crash, at far too young an age. It's an extremely relatable song for alot of people who have lost friends or family at a young age. Also, I think the first verse of this song is one of the most beautiful bits of writing I have ever heard. But read the lyrics in the 2nd comment, because the main ones above are buggered. | |
| The Gaslight Anthem – Old White Lincoln Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Baby darling, we will be, in the cold cold ground." is wrong. It's "Bring a dollar with you, baby, in the cold, cold ground." That's an homage to Tom Waits, and his song "Cold Cold Ground". Just one of several homages and references that Fallon makes in his songs. |
| The Gaslight Anthem – Great Expectations Lyrics | 16 years ago |
It's old life, for sure. This song is just about him worrying that his wife might leave him. There's an underlying anxiety to the whole idea of the song. He's experienced a great loss in his past, and he fears it happening again. The chorus of this song is great. I always picture two red tail lights driving away. I also love the couplet at the end of the first verse: "Her heart was like a tomb. My heart's like a wound." They go from A-minor to F and it sounds magnificient. |

| The Gaslight Anthem – Drive Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Lyric correction: "Though it's sad enough for tears, it's been try, fail, try for years." Although until I read the booklet, I thought it was "it's been dropping dry for years." Haha. To me, this is one of they're best songs. I am surprised no one else has commented on it. Great sing along chorus. |
| The Gaslight Anthem – Red at Night Lyrics | 16 years ago |
To me this song is all about recognizing your blessings despite the curses. One correction on the lyrics: "This blessing's so hard to see sometimes, got a little clearer 'bout dusk last night." |
| The Gaslight Anthem – Here's Looking at You, Kid Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Oh man. Bingo. This song does it for me everytime. |
| Tim Barry – This November Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I really dig this tune because I can relate to needing time alone with my thoughts. That's what I think this song is really about. You can be down in the dumps, and sometimes you need family and friends to reach out to; other times you just need to sit alone, reflect, and feel. It also reminds me of my ex-girlfriend, who always said I didn't talk enough about my feelings. Whatever. | |
| Tim Barry – 5 Twenty 5 Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I remember the first time I heard this song, riding a train from Auckland to Wellington in NZ. I was absolutely floored when he sung the last line. It really moved me. It's kind of cool because I don't ever remember being affected by a song on the first listen like that. "When they say I'm getting nervous, well I feel like I'm fucking caving in." Lyrics above have some mistakes. |
| Chuck Ragan – Geraldine Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Cut from you Near death You drew the breath That made me one. Stellar. |
| Chuck Ragan – Symmetry Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Yeah, on his live album "Los Feliz" he intro's the song saying it's a love song he wrote for his wife. Wicked song too. |
| Lucero – 1979 Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| The song is pretty obvious. Not one of my favourites, but a decent tune. | |
| Lucero – Fistful Of Tears Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think it's "Now I've done one thing right..." That's my favourite line in the song. |
