It starts out with someone who most likely is looking for something different. It then leads into how with a good look, they're earnest, but totally locked into their comfort bubble. They want to change, but they don't want it to change, and become defensive because of their wavering doubt and insecurity (you attempt to hold your ground...) His idea is to shake it up by actually going out and seeing the world for all it is, doing senseless and crazy things for the sake of doing senseless and crazy things and enjoying it. Put a hammer to it! |

I'm definitely with the love camp on the meaning of this song. Specifically, the first crush, and the first time one finally gathers the courage to confront it. There are several key points that lead me to this. (relax, I won't requote the whole song, just assume the '...' mean I'm directing you to everything between) "I Can See...haunt my mind" Love on sight, or love at first sight, with a little mix of that whole agonizing when you should be sleeping thing. It's painfully common, especially when you're trying to slam yourself with the classic low self-esteem "I'm not good enough, just forget it" (Things I Thought I'd Put Behind Me ) "I Just Know...In The Eyes" Admitting that your have feelings for person, and realizing that you're gonna need a bit more courage to pursue it. The chorus more or less follows this, but I'd like to put special focus on two lines... "Won't Close My Eyes And Hide The Truth Inside" "If I Don't Make It, Someone Else Will" Refusal to just give it up (like you have in the past, perhaps? I get that feeling, but it might just be personal experience here) and fear that if you don't act on your feelings, your love will be taken by another. "It's All Around...Can I Take It?" Do you really want to put your heart on the line like this? This part is what makes me believe that this song is specifically the first love, and the fear of loss that comes hand in hand. Again, this might be slightly skewed from personal experience. Though This Might...Back From Here Decision. From the shift in the song and the gravity and firmness of the singing, it feels like the choice has been made; that it's worth the risk, or that it doesn't matter because the heart is committed to it despite being dual-minded about the whole situation. All I Know For Sure Is That I'm Trying I Will Always Stand My Ground This part is sung in a comparatively small voice, almost like a plea, which crescendos back into the firm devotion to the decision. I know this feeling in a painfully direct way. There's a very real pain here, as one takes themself out of the comfort zone. Final Thoughts- With all this being said, this song is another great example of multi-meaning, where a person's own experiences and perspective will be the biggest driving factor in how it's seen. Within Temptation has quite a few songs like this, and it's probably one of the reasons why their music is so good. Obviously, it helps that they're excellent artists too. |

| This is a really good song, for many reasons, but most importantly (for this site, anyway) is the lyrical content. There are so many different interpretations that can be applied to this song, even without any consideration to WT's original intent. As stated above, this is the direct idea of a leader using their political power and tyranny to herd the sheeple. There's also the very Christian context of Satan the deceiver and seducer, or even as temptation itself. I could expostulate on the facets of this for ages, I'm sure, but really, the core of it is that this song will apply to you on some level, no matter what your beliefs and perspective have to offer you. | |
