I don't think that this song is spiritual, but it is about religion. if that makes sense? It is obviously about their faith because the words "heaven shine a light down on me" were not included in the song by accident! However, I believe the reason they claim to not be a religious band is because they are not preaching their faith, rather in this song they are expressing doubt in their belief. It seems like this song is about how their religious upbringing has influenced their past epxerience some how. You don't need to be a religious band to sing about that. |

I have 2 theories of what this song means... FIRST THEORY: i think that the voodoo child is her partner because he/she has a hold on her. natalie is the voodoo doll. i think the difference between suicide and martyrdom are the intentions of the person. a person who committed suicide would have done it out of selfishness, because they are too concerned with their own problems. a martyr doesn't die because they think that life is trash. they respect the fact that life is a gift from God and it is up to God to take it away. they die standing up for something they believe in. it's an act of love, just like when Jesus died on the cross to save humanity. |

It’s so obvious that Flyeleaf is a Christian rockband. But I don’t think that this particular song is about God. I interpreted it to be about the death of someone she loves. “Sometimes life seems to quiet into paralyzing silence Like the moonless dark, meant to make me strong.” -The night is a time for rest and making us strong, but she can’t sleep because she is too upset and thinking about her loss. “Familiar breath of my old lies Changed the color in my eyes Soon he will perferate the fabric of the peaceful by and by” -He will perforate and become part of heaven, referred to as ‘the peaceful’. “Sorrow lasts through this night I'll take this piece of you, and hold for all eternity For just one second I felt whole... as you flew right through me.” -Sorrow is a word used to describe death. She’ll hold onto memories of him forever. She could feel his presence, feel his spirit around/through her. “Left alone with only reflections of the memory To face the ugly girl that's smothering me.” -All she has left are her memories. The ugly girl is herself. She blames herself for suffocating with depression. “Sitting closer than my pain... He knew each tear before it came, And soon he will perforate the fabric of the peaceful by and by” -Here she is using imagery to reinforce the fact that she can feel his presence (again). Imagine his spirit sitting close to her, watching her cry. He understands her pain even before each tear falls. “We kiss each other one more time And sing this lie that's half way mine The sword is slicing through the questions so I won't be fooled By his angel light..” -They kiss each other one more time, but it’s partially a lie because he can’t really kiss her back (because he’s dead — sorry if I’m a bit blunt) “Sorrow lasts through this night I'll take this piece of you and for all eternity For just one second I felt whole as you flew right though me and up into the stars” -Imagine his spirit passing through her one last time, before he continues to take his place in heaven. “Joy will come.” -Although there is sorrow at the moment, she knows that there are brighter days to look forward to. |
