I honestly won't read all the posts. i listened to this today again and it hit me so hard. this is about a guy who's girlfriend has a sexual past...he tried to make it work but cannot get over it. i think he gave into sexual temptation but not complete sexual intercourse. they talked about boundaries but he's tempted to ignore them, knowing she will also. he knows it's wrong to be in this destructive relationship but doesn't want to tell her it's because of her sexual temptation and past. he struggles with his feelings of guilt and regret...and her apparent lack of regret and guilt. this is my interpretation....mostly from personal experience, but it all seems to fit. imo |

| I think he's refering to Saul of Tarsus, in the New Testament, who persecuted Christians. This is a powerful song. Perhaps he is saying that he considers himself a Christian but struggles at times with his faith. The line about the grace being too hard to swallow makes sense because many wonder how they could be forgiven for what they've done. Especially if he says he runs from Saul but sees a bit of Saul in him. This could be about feelings of hypocrisy calling himself a Christian but also judging and persecuting some for what they believe. This song is littered with biblical references and references to faith. It almost seems like a prayer because he appears to be singing to God. To me this is obviously a man struggling with his faith...i recognize the feelings. | |

| i think this song is about david not being ready to leave this life, like most people can feel as they grow towards death. goliath met his end, uriah his, david's family before him, all differently. death isn't concerned with what we have or haven't finished here. i think mwY uses this example of david as a way of relaying the fact that we will die, ready or not. beautiful. | |
