I think the "freakeat phantom" is a metaphor for his heart. He's basically saying how he doesnt ever feel anything-he's weak-"Resting himself on his crutches" and depressed. And then all of the sudden he see's this girl and this "freakbeat phantom" namely his heart touches him (begins to beat out of character as he feels so dead inside) and he feels alive again. Like he can hold on and get through it. It becomes a shock to him "confusion cuts through the air" that he can feel this way. When the "freakbeat illuminates the night" he can enjoy himself again and he can see things more clearly. It's a song about hope. Well thats basically my disected opinion of the song. I was listening to it on the beach and it just came to me what it's about. I could be wrong but thats what the song says to me. :) |

I'm aware this song is directed at a significant other but this really reminds me of when my dad died. Just the talk of the hospitals and the train of thought, it's so insightful- I can relate totally. This song gave me some closure in a weird way it felt like someone finally got it. Amazing song. |

| This song is beautiful. One of my favourite from death cab. It really gives you hope when you feel like crap and no ones ever gonna want you again. Any musicians that can make you believe in loving or give you hope again are the real stars of today. Not all the Britneys or Rhiannas people like these guys. | |
