Neither way. They object to the system and the endless fighting and the authority and the self proclaimed heroes who do nothing for the people they claim to be fighting for. Wasted Life goes into more detail. |

Whether or not something is popular should define a sellout. If a good band however, weakens thier voice or radically changes thier musical styling to get radio play, that is selling out. Big difference. |

Whether Green Day are punk or altern rock is a massive wank of an argument. Proves how shitty and closed minded the punk scene has become. The Clash, one of the greatest punk bands to pick up instruments, had stopped releasing traditional punk songs (loud and 3 chords) by 1978, but the music they played was still undoubtably punk (Listen to Clampdown for example). If they were around today, all the so called 'punks' would call them sell-outs and altern. rock or whatever.
Fuck that.
You wanna be a punk? Don't be a snob and reject someone because their Ramones t-shirt says 'Marky' instead of 'Tommy'. It's the attitude that matters, not the pissy details. Either Green Day are self indulgent sell out fucks, saying shit to sell records and fighting an establishment which they are signed up members of or they are good, with strength in their convictions and an attitude which the isolated members of Western youth can relate to. That's the propper punk rock argument. Leave 'punk' and 'altern rock' tag arguments to 'real' music fans, ones that like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd (pretentious pricks, exactly what punks are becoming). |

While I would agree with you that the anti George Bush sentiment is an exceptionally tired entertainment cliche, it could be argued that Billie Joe Armstrong being an active member of a political party (Libertarian) would count as the political action you were talking about.
You do need someone in your society to critisize it or else it's fucked up. See a multitude of oppressive reigimes from China to Iran where people can't critisize the reigime.
Also puting yourself above the people who disagree with you not only makes you a pretentious prick, 9/10 times it means you are quite clearly wrong because you cannot rely on your own argument.
All in all, I'd say go fuck yourself but you seem to be already doing that. |

This is thier best song in my opinion. It's dripping with the grunge of 1970's London, but at the same time timeless and could be talking about any city of the Western world. |

I always thought "The Irish tomb was drenched in blood" was a reference to the 700 Irish volunteers who went over to fight on the side of the facists but wouldn't fire on Basque rebels because they recognised thier struggle in the one they fought for thier own country back home. Been known to be wrong before though. |

I Can't just leave this song uncommented even if I only have a basic grasp of what it means.
I think it's about someone considering suicide and his mate pulling him out, reminding him of a time when they held thier hands high (Arms aloft.) I think it is about not letting your friends take the easy way out. I think it is about us having a lot to live for.

Dukesup mate, once he beat Hillary there was no way in hell McCain was going to win. In that sense he was far more the overlord.
I reckon it's about the person who thinks they can rest on thier laurels, anyone who is satisfied will be beaten by someone who isn't. |

While your explanation is plausable and in my view right, I reckon 'hey shut up' is someone pretending to be modest. As in 'you did great', 'hey shut up'. |

Of Course the Clash sold out. Have you not heard Rock the Casbah, Should I stay or should I go or the whole Cut the Crap album. All bands do eventually and Strummer knew it more than most. |
