| I looked up at the wall and there was this photo of a Ballerina, it was a still from a very old black and white movie, I studied the photo the ballerina had a very somber look on her face, she was kind of looking down and there was something up in the corner of the photo, a kind of ghostly figure and it seemed to me as though it was haunting her and it immediately took me to somebody that I knew in my personal life. The sadness in that ballerina was portraying this woman that I know who is in the entertainment industry and was suffering at the time from being… she had gotten quite successful and then been completely cut down as seems to be the common way that the public like to cut people down to size when they get a little too arrogant or start believing the hype too much. I was looking at this and I was kind of afraid watching her. I was like,” I don’t want to be successful. If I’m successful then everyone will hate me and it was very confusing.” I also felt very sorry for her. I felt that she was a victim of some cruel aspects of today’s society. It’s funny how one little thing can grow into something much bigger and it turned out to be the inspiration for this song" - Missy Higgins | |

| Missy Higgins – Hold Me Tight Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
My interpretation: I always thought this song was about a quiet, shy guy that has been in love with her for a very long time. He has been dropping hints forever (the notes that say "hold me tight") and she just disregards them. On one hand, she hopes it's blank, meaning she's hoping he's given up. On the other hand: Now i should run outside I should be running after you I should need to cry But i dont i stay Cos theres a little bit inside me that likes this pain She likes that he wants her so bad, but she doesn't want to be with him. The "pointless flares" are the signals he's given her, the little ways he's told her that he loves her. He's losing the energy to fight because he's beginning to see it as a pointless effort. |

| Missy Higgins – Dancing dirt into the snow Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
My interpretation: I think this song is Missy's reply to someone throwing a tantrum over something stupid (like, maybe Missy's success). She's dancing dirt into the snow, so she's mucking up the area with her rumors and bad attitude. She's trying to get attention. The first line "Alone you find yourself just hanging, and to fill the hole you cling to all that seems, to hide the little girl that crying, underneath the rage that you let others see." tells me that the person is really insecure so she stirs up problems to make herself feel important. "cling to all that seems" - the person jumps on gossip and accusations (instead of facts). "Eyes wooden" seems to me that the person is looking at Missy with blank eyes, jealous of the attention she gets because she is so talented. "The more you push through broken glass" seems to be basically saying, the more you lie and stir up problems, the more trouble you get yourself into. |

This is my favorite song of hers. My interpretation: They used to be together, but now they are just friends. She still loves him and is trying, unsuccessfully, to get his attentions again. - "You never miss a thing, but you miss me there.". She's not willing to give up on the relationship just yet. She tries to cry, but can't. (The flood gates open...etc.) She feels doubt about trying to get with him again, but her heart tells her to hold her ground and keep at it. "They keep saying this is part of the ride, but I'm not getting stronger." - her friends are trying to tell her, it'll be ok and this is what happens in relationships. So, now she sits at home alone, in angst over the whole thing - hence, the knot in her side. The part about pulling out the chair, I think, refers to her struggling with the idea of doing something drastic to get his attention. She's basically torn about whether the relationship is really over or not. The light and bullet line, I think, is about trying to prove she is not really wounded - she's playing tough on the outside while she's tormented on the inside. ..... hmmm.... am I reading too much into it? |

| Missy Higgins – Warm Whispers Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
My interpretation: She is dreaming a lovely dream about someone she lost... The whispers carry her out of the dark and into the dawn. She wants to stay surrounded, meaning she doesn't want to wake up. She is weeping because she is sad that she lost her, but it's warm honey and milk because in her dream, she is there with her, happy. The whispers keep the noise from breaking through because when you dream, you are completely immersed in it... surrounded... in a "pool" of visions and memories. At the end of the song, I think she wakes up and realizes that she is really gone... Kinda fits the melody, too. It's very light and airy, in my opinion. |
