@[poopytheclown:54337] The original song, Noreen, was written by Ohgr. This version contains the basic music, but the lyrics are completely different and has nothing to do with politics. Check it out on YouTube. |

One more thing...
"these clothes don't fit us right/and I'm to blame" - This relationship is not working out and you blame me for it. |

I take this song as someone giving an inventory of problems from a past relationship and coming to the conclusion that it is crazy what the other person has passed up. "I need this", I think, is the writer acknowledging that he needs the conclusion of the relationship. |

While I cannot say if this song is reference to a wife or mother, I believe it to be a celebration of an older woman and the life that she lived. Recognition of the peace and contentment in the latter years of one's life. The reference to teeth is, I believe, a reference to an older person falling asleep with dentures left in.
M. Stipe is a genius are referencing such everyday, trivial observations. |

What a bunch of perverts!
Has it ever occurred to you that the lyric "my hand is tired" is referencing writer's cramp as a result of trying to write a letter that never seems to come out right? Good lord, so many minds in the gutter (though it would be humorous if you were right!). |

I think I can help clear up some of the confusion.
A LONG time back, I read an article with Eddie Vedder about this song. While he would not divulge the lyrics he did give an explanation as to it's meaning. It concerns a young man whose family receives word that his brother has died (given the time that the song was written it is widely accepted as the Gulf War). The young man, depressed goes for a walk and comes across an older couple sitting on their porch. Despite his personal loss and grief, he waves to the couple. The couple judge the young man by his appearance (again, given the timeframe, it is widely accepted as the then popular grunge look) and do not wave back thinking the young man is just another smart ass kid. Vedder intentionally wrote the song to be vague so as to avoid typecasting the song as anti-war. He alluded to performing the song as best he could given his 'state' (drunk, perhaps?). The song of course then blossomed into an anthem that is different at every performance. There is debate on whether the lyrics are 'I don't know whether I'm the boxer or the bag' - a phrase very similar to the old 'some days you are the nail and other days you are the hammer'.
Whatever you take, the song was meant to represent misinterpretation of one's identity; a book being judged by it's cover. |
