this is my take on it... the laughing is almost mocking god/believing that he isnt there. here is a breakdown of laughing with. No one laughs at God in a hospital- no one mocks/doesnt believe in god in serious situations.. eg hospital or war No one laughs at God in a war.. as above ... doesnt mock god because of the seriousness of the situation No one's laughing at God when they're starving or freezing or so very poor- no one mocks god in this situation because God is all they have... well they believe this. No one laughs at God when the doctor calls after some routine tests- again a serious situation ... eg i hope to god i dont have this that etc... they pray.. which clearly shows they believe in higher powers. No one's laughing at God when it's gotten real late and their kid's not back from that party yet- making out that its not a funny situation as something could have happened to their kids... praying again.. beleive that god will help them. No one laughs at God when their airplane starts to uncontrollably shake- fear, people start to pray. No one's laughing at God when they see the one they love hand in hand with someone else and they hope that they're mistaken- love is not a joke and again serious situation No one laughs at God when the cops knock on their door and they say "We've got some bad new, sir,"- serious situation where no one is laughing/eg death accident etc. No one's laughing at God when there's a famine, fire or flood- no one will laugh when the world suffers . But God can be funny- meaning god can show humour At a cocktail party while listening to a good God-themed joke or Or when the crazies (non religious people maybe) say he hates us- meaning that god hates us thats why he is laughing etc. and they get so red in the head you think that they're about to choke God can be funny When told he'll give you money if you just pray the right way And when presented like a genie- magical higher power Who does magic like Houdini- has incredible tricks/power Or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket and Santa Claus- grants wishes as though they are not real God can be so hilarious Ha ha Ha ha No one laughs at God in a hospital- what i said b4 No one laughs at God in a war No one's laughing at God when they've lost all they got and they don't know what for- meaning that the person will not be laughing when they have lost everything they have .... they confide in god. No one laughs at God on the day they realize that the last sight they'll ever see is a pair of hateful eyes- meaning that the last pair of eyes they see.. either b4 they die or having a fight is a pair of 'hateful eyes' which isnt funny. No one's laughing at God when they're saying their goodbyes- could possibly mean death as no one is laughing as they are farwelling there loved ones. in summary all the things in the song which are mentioned are serious/bad situations eg war/hospital etc etc... this song shows no one is laughing at god when all these things happen as we confide in him to help us through certain situations and the last line were all laughing with him means he is being taken as a joke until something bad happens in our life and we find comfort in either praying or talking to god. here is my take on it. its obviously a friend who does drugs we have established that and the other friend is trying to get him back. Step one you say we need to talk: Meaning that the friend has approached his mate about talking. Using force by saying we need to talk. He walks you say sit down it's just a talk meaning that a talk is just very harmless and he is not in trouble or the friend isnt going to bite. He smiles politely back at you meaning that he knows what is coming but is to afraid to talk and just gives like a nervous smile back You stare politely right on through meaning you are trying to help them but listening but all you can do is stare. Some sort of window to your right mEANing that there is sort of the light at the end of the tunnel to the right ... like a solution or help/theapy As he goes left and you stay right meaning that he is not taking the right option and going that way but going the complete opposite. Between the lines of fear and blame meaning that the friend fears for his friends life but also at the same time is blaming him for where he has come to.. who he has become.. And you begin to wonder why you came you start doubting as a person if this guy is worth trying to save and wonder why you came Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend ----- meaning that the drugs has taken his friend from him Somewhere along in the bitterness------------ the drugs And would I have stayed up with you all night----- would have done anything to help his friend Had I known how to save a life-------- if he knew what to do.. he would help Let him know that you know best----- meaning that you are a good example.... tell him you know best Cause after all you do know best---- he doesnt do drugs/good role model Try to slip past his defense---- try to get past what he is trying not to show you/or block out Without granting innocence------- without saying its ok... be firm... but fair and caring Lay down a list of what is wrong---- tell him directly what is wrong ... caring again The things you've told him all along--- meaning that you have said this from the start And I pray to God he hears you---- hope to god he hears you.. listens/understands what he is doing wrong And I pray to God he hears you Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend Somewhere along in the bitterness And would I have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life As he begins to raise his voice--- defending himself /getting mad for his friend trying to change him You lower yours and grant him one last choice----- last choice being stay friends with me or im going/choose the drugs Drive until you lose the road----- never give up on what you chasing sorta thing Or break with the ones you've followed--- give up and take the easy way out He will do one of two things---- he is making a choice here You will admit to everything----- he will tell you everything/breakdown etc want to to listen Or he'll say he's just not the same--- close up and stay defensive And you'll begin to wonder why you came--- and you will doubt why you came... eg waste of time.. not worth it .. thats my take on it.. its a great song with a great meaning. xx MILZ |
