To me it seems this song is telling a story from a mother's or family point of view. The kid is anxious to go to war and even die serving his country, which is terrible, but isn't as terrible as being a mother sitting back home "behind these empty walls" wondering if she'll ever see her son alive again. "Pretentious adventures" *(combat and going to war are often glorified and young soldiers are anxious to go because of that) "Dismissive apprehension" *(being enlisted to service and giving in to it like everyone else) "Don't waste your time, On coffins today," *(a request not to go to the army/war, for it will simply get you killed) "Don't you see their bodies burning?" *(of the other young soldiers who died in the war) "Desolate and full of yearning" *(being 'proud patriots' that are anxious to serve their countries) Dying of anticipation, *(again, to go to war and serve their country) "Choking from intoxication" *(being brainwashed with all these other, 'high values', thinking their own lives have none) "I loved you yesterday, (From behind those empty walls...) Before you killed my family" *(A mother loves her son, even as he goes to war and leaving his family behind, she's waiting for him but he dies and the family is braking to pieces) The repeating lines: "I want you to be left behind those empty walls, Told you to see from behind those empty walls" Interprets for me as a mother wishing for her son to see for once how it feels from her point of view, to be left waiting back at home, watching the child that she raised and loved for many years simply going to throw his life away for some pretentious values. Perhaps it is even better that he is left from behind those empty walls, for at least that way he won't die. |

jeffrey Dahmer murdered 17 men between the years 1978-1991. His murders were particularly gruesome, involving rape, torture, dismemberment, necrophilia and cannibalism. Perhaps the song is asking how is such a monster manages to escape from punishment for such a long time, obviously because of the police being idiots. quoted from wikipedia: "In the early morning hours of May 30, 1991, 14-year-old Konerak Sinthasomphone (by chance, the younger brother of the boy whom Dahmer had molested) was discovered on the street, wandering naked, heavily under the influence of drugs and bleeding from his rectum. Two young women from the neighborhood found the dazed boy and called 911. Dahmer chased his victim down and tried to take him away, but the women stopped him.[29] Dahmer told police that Sinthasomphone was his 19-year-old boyfriend, and that they had an argument while drinking. Against the protests of the two women who had called 911, police turned him over to Dahmer. They later reported smelling a strange scent while inside Dahmer's apartment, but did not investigate it. The smell was the body of Tony Hughes, Dahmer's previous victim, decomposing in the bedroom. The two policemen failed to run a background check which would have revealed that Dahmer was a convicted sex offender still under probation.[30] The officers laughed about the incident, one joking that his partner was "going to get deloused."[31] Later that night, Dahmer killed and dismembered Sinthasomphone, keeping his skull as a souvenir. John Balcerzak and Joseph Gabrish, two of the three police officers who returned Sinthasomphone to Dahmer, were fired from the Milwaukee Police Department after their actions were widely publicized, including an audiotape of the officers making homophobic statements to their dispatcher and cracking jokes about having reunited the "lovers". The two officers appealed their termination and were reinstated with back pay. They were named officers of the year by the police union for fighting a "righteous" battle to regain their jobs. Balcerzak would go on to be elected president of the Milwaukee Police Association in May 2005." See, the irony is that idiots like these police officers, or effed up criminals like Dahmer are often get idolized because everyone is too absorbed inside their politically correct bubble to see the plain and simple truth. The last lines in the song: "Heres the fucking point Nations and their governments should provide,protect,and serve it's citizens. Not the interest of the multinationals." to me say exactly that. The Dahmer case could apply to many other cases as such, both from criminal and "law" side. |

It's true that Serj has alot of songs with political meaning, but it doesn't necessarily means that this all his songs are like that. In my opinion, this one is about having a relationship with a girl with suicidal tendencies, or more likely a girl that fakes being suicidal/depressed to get attention. The singer may have been intrigued/interested in the girl, but is beginning to grow tired of her obsession/behavior, still having some benefits such as a sexual relations (all of 1st verse), but growing tired of if all eventually ("because you love me, let me go"), perhaps even starting to hate her ("cause I'm your brother" may indicate that he no longer has any physical attraction towards her), and offering her to simply go and kill herself like she wants. (the verse "lie lie lie" further hints at the girl being fake with her suicidal/depressive attitude). He offers to help her to end her life, and she agrees thinking he'll stop her from doing it. Then his hate/disgust overcomes him (or perhaps he was planning it all along) and he lets her fall and die, smiling in wicked irony, (as blackrocker mentioned). |
