| The Mountain Goats – Wild Sage Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| In an NPR Music performance this year, John Darnielle spoke briefly about how this song portrays the day-to-day struggles of mental illness (around the 51 minute mark: http://www.npr.org/event/music/148782993/the-mountain-goats-and-anonymous-4). "When you work every day in hospitals, you can become numb to the struggles of the people you're working with... [so] you try to keep that feeling with you, so that when you work, you never forget that you're trying to help people who have a hard time helping themselves." | |
| Simon and Garfunkel – The Only Living Boy In New York Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
i had been brought up on simon and garfunkel, but i didn't know this song until my boyfriend burned it on a mix cd to listen to on my trip to china last summer. near the end of my trip i landed in shanghai and slipped my headphones on, and as the bus pulled into downtown, the song came on. "hey, i've got nothing to do today but smile... and here i am. here i am." skyscraper after skyscraper passed by, and i was in awe of it all. i was there, soaking in the eastern sun and he was alone back home. we're not together anymore - my own fickle fault, and i regret it almost every day. but i will always associate this song with that sense of wonderment i felt as the city unfolded before me, and the feeling of my heart swelling with the chorus as i thought of the boy back home who cared enough about me to let my honesty "shine, shine, shine" - even when i was gone and didn't know where. he will always be the only living boy in new york to me. |
