Posted on deerhunter's blog- "the music for strange lights was written entireley by lockett, who told me about a dream he had in which he and i and our friend walked into the sun together, knowing it was going to kill us, but we did it anyway just to be doing something together i guess. I think of this as an unrequited homoerotic lovesong from me to someone else. Its very complicated. It's mainly about brotherhood or friendship. It's about companionship, and facing uncertainty with someone to share it with. Pretty sentimental stuff but its the product of our interpersonal relationships and stuff and is really meant to be sincere." To Aoshie, it would make absolutely no sense to put this song first. They weren't attempting to make it accessible to...whoever, they recorded this CD during two completely different sessions with polar opposite tones, feelings and execution. Bradford Cox has been noted to be dealing with a lot of personal issues during the making of this CD, which is vividly apparent on the first half. After the transition through ambient songs and mood swings, you arrive to happier tones and concepts. This belongs towards the end, because the CD as a whole progresses the same way production did. |

| Foxy Shazam! – NO! Don't Shoot Lyrics | 16 years ago |

The piano part about finding a bar of soap under the sink is in reference to an old urban myth at the grade school Eric Nally and I went to; Covedale. From what I remember, the myth was about people finding bars of soap under the sink with "Lisa" carved into them. Rumor has it our school used to have a shower room where dumbass Lisa slipped on a bar of soap and died. Terrible urban myth, but a badass song nonetheless. |

It's definitely about a matador going to work. An interviewer from some magazine specifically asked what this song was about, and Eric Nally explained the day-to-day life of a matador. (I think the magazine was Absolute Punk?) As for the torpedoes, ever heard of a metaphor? They could easily represent the horns of a bull. Hands down my favorite Foxy song. Seen every one of their shows in Cincy since the were Train of Thought. My high school band actually played a show with them at a swim club during the Flamingo Trigger era....so amazing. My old band? Shitty in comparison. |
