| The National – Daughters of the SoHo Riots Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I know this doesn't have much to do with actual interpretation, but in this live version Matt Berninger actually starts crying: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJj-1-LiRS0 I wish I knew what he wrote it about... |

| fun. – The Gambler Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Actually I think Nate's dad got sick for a while (listen to On Your Porch) and it's kind of like his pledge that he won't leave before his time... meaning he's staying alive for his family/Nate's mom. That line makes me feel like crying everyyyy time. | |
| Vampire Weekend – Run Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I think it's "change in rolls", like when people keep a change jar in their house. The girl has a stash of money ("but with her fund") and the guy is talking about how they could take the money and either elope or just get away from their day to day lives for a while. The "battered radio" thing almost makes me think they're taking a road trip. The only line that trips me up is "I could take two but I really couldn't ever know" Anyone know what it means? |

| The Format – Snails Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I watch her as she runs- For some reason i think this is about nate's sister coming home to visit, not a girlfriend My mother jumps the gun She puts her in her arms That is just like my mom- his mom runs to greet her Never lets go, never lets me grow old I wanna pay her back But love is nothing you can tax My familys not rich by any means But I feel we won the lottery, that day- the family is reunited and nate feels that this is better than actually being rich, kind of self explanatory The rock swallowed the girl- i can't figure this one out, but it sounds like someone crying to me, or maybe the live on a mountain? And I cried as cameras caught my eyes- from here on it's definitely about a funeral they all had to go to My tears turned into butterflies- maybe he's grateful for what he has and the funeral made him realize that They fly away as caskets close A new day comes you'll wake unfold Smile when you feel the sunlight You feel the sunlight You feel the sunlight- this definitely has a theme of renewal So, i don't think it's about a girl wanting to get too serious. not this verse at least. it seems like this song would be the type of thing you write when you're feeling a combo of everything. i love it! |

| fun. – Take Your Time (Coming Home) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
This sounds like the story of The Format break up to me...or at least how Nate dealt with it. This was the last song fun. played at their concert, it really broke my heart. The words and melody are just beautiful, and they come to such an amazing resolution. Love it, can't wait for the album! |

| Grizzly Bear – Two Weeks Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I like these lyrics quite a bit. Especially that it feels like whoever this is is having the same conversation over and over. In my opinion, it's a couple, and someone in the relationship needs to feel reassured, so they keep asking the questions: Would you always Maybe sometimes Make it easy Take your time Whoever they're talking to clearly doesn't have the answer about how committed they are, hence "Take your time." |

| Okkervil River – Lost Coastlines Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| i completely agree, although a political meaning sounds cool, this way makes more sense with what was happening to the band at the time the album came out. and the whole meaning just kind of fits better. | |
| Voxtrot – Steven Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
This song, to me, is about growing up and moving away. For some reason when I listen to it I imagine the singer writing a letter to this guy named Steven, although I have no evidence as to why I get that image. It seems that the singer could be going off to boarding school or college, but regardless, he's moved away from a childhood friend and is sad that they are both getting older. During the transition the singer stops recognizing himself, saying, "Maybe I want to be myself, but I am somebody else." One of the main themes is personal responsibility that comes from adulthood (I'd be overly flattered to feel so shattered to, have something broken and fixed.) When you're a kid, you can have something "broken and fixed" by adults, but once you mature it isn't so simple. The speaker clearly misses Steven but also the childhood innocence that he possessed, hence, "I swear that I will pull you from the wreckage of this sunday, monday routine. I will pull you from the wreckage. oh, don't you need me on my own." He wishes they could both revert to that younger mindset they had together. As for the labor analogy (Nine months later, I'm the lonely one, with all the fruit of labor and half of the fun.)- I think it's just a witty pun, like he's been the only one really buckling down and working the past 9 months (also that's the amount of time in a school year? just sayin) but because of this maturity nothing is as fun. So yes. As other people have said, it's about maturing into an adult. That's just my break down of some lines. |

| Great Lake Swimmers – Changing Colours Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
I know this may sound really dumb, but I didn't even notice the "changing seasons" references until today. "I've known you all Summer, and you rose above it all. I see you hesitate to fall now..." "I knew you when you were green and strong." "The cold air is pushing hard on you." He's comparing the girl to summer, and now the season is changing but he promises to stay with her even as she changes. Pretty cool. |

| What Made Milwaukee Famous – The Right Place Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
What confuses me about this song is "Plead with me and beg me not to stay" rather than begging someone to say, the person is being begged to leave. That doesn't sound like something that happens in a relationship, because the other person could just leave. I then wonder if this is about the singer taking care of someone else, maybe a sibling or a friend- "So you can still get stoned everyday" As long as the singer is there, they take care of the person and force them to stay on track/make something of their life. So that person "begs them not to stay" so they can just give up. The singer is then discouraged, saying: Oh, I once said 'good luck' and really hoped that it'd work out, And felt certain that this time you'd get it right. But I've since been dismayed by your careless mistakes, And I'm sick and tired of hoping that you might. They're tired of being invested in this person's well-being when they clearly don't care and still make mistakes or destructive decisions. That's just my take on it. I could be wrong. |

| Paul Baribeau – Last Time Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
No one? Really? This is my favorite Paul Baribeau song. It's so incredibly honest. I think it kind of fits my feelings about graduation, but it could really be the sentiments of anyone who has to leave the people they love. I especially love: Everywhere I go everyone I know comes with Wonder how many more I can fit inside this crowded, crazy heart. I know that feeling. |

| The Format – A Mess To Be Made Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
"And a voice on the other end of the phone says 'Why don't you write a song about it?' Well here goes" This line, for some reason, is one of the most emotional things I've ever heard the format play. Amazing. |
