| Genesis – Say It's Alright Joe Lyrics

Agreed this song is a amazing... I like your thoughts but I always thought the "I'll be coming back early or never at all... Shine on!" implied he'll be back at the pub early doors to carry on numbing out the pain, or else he'll have either quit or be dead. |

IMHO The first half of each line is a history of revolutionaries, the second half of each line mirrors revol into lover and is a brutally honest romantic history of lyricist Richey Edward. |

| Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb Lyrics

To me this is about dissociation... the way the mind sometimes distances or absences itself to avoid potentially traumatic situations. Whether a sick child, an adult stuck doing a job they hate, or a victim of abuse. Shut down and Escape... |

| New Order – Ceremony Lyrics

The popular New Order version has re-written lyrics by Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook as the original written lyrics by Ian Curtis couldn't be found. There's a couple of recordings with Ian singing but it's very hard to make out the words... and you can see how they struggled and had to make changes... That said there's some definite differences.
eg. Ian sings, "Oh I'll break them all, no mercy shown".... here i think the first time he's talking about smashing marriage vows, living for now in the moment...
The second time with the wonderful 'Avenues all lined with trees' line he's talking about smashing the will to live, nihilism, death etc. |

| Coil – Batwings (A Limnal Hymn) Lyrics

Limnal means, 'Of or pertaining to lakes and ponds.'
Much of the imagery comes from: http://penelope.uchicago.edu/misctracts/museum.html
eg. "A Moon Piece, describing that notable Battel between Axalla, General of Tamerlane, and Camares the Persian, fought by the light of the Moon." and "An handsome Piece of Deformity expressed in a notable hard Face, with this Inscription,37
——Ora Julius in Satyris qualia Rufus habet." |

| Coil – Bee Stings Lyrics

A.E. is short for AEON aka mystical poet /writer George Russell.
Jhonn Balance writes, "He has writen some of the most inspiring and inspired prose about direct enchantment and trancendental communion with Nature. I mention him in the COIL song Bee-stings when I sing "Don't believe A.E. See for yourselves the summer fields" - A plea for experiential outings, pilgrimages etc.
Get out there - Travel! It's in both the journey and the destination..."

About how the only certainty in life is change and how the inability to accept it often leads to relationships failing... whether it's people in a love affair breaking up, or a band evolving their sound, song-writing methods etc and an element of their fanbase not being able to accept it. |

| James – Say Something Lyrics
|
|
To me it's a dual meaning song, on the one hand wanting a relationship with a person, but being unable to get through to them or respond... on the other, wanting to believe in God, and doing everything the writer perceives that God wants, but getting nothing back... standing on the edge of the cliff and screaming into the void, 'Come on then, where are you? Say *something*' |
