The National – Pink Rabbits Lyrics 12 years ago
Anyone think this song could be related to "This is The Last Time"?

The lines that made me think about it are "You always said I held you way too high off the ground" and "Oh, when I lift you up/You feel like a hundred times yourself".

The National – Sea of Love Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this is the story behind it: Jo has been hanging around with bad people. The narrator wants to get to her and help her, but he doesn't know how to do it. Then he realizes that if he stays with her, he might never be able to leave because he'll be caught up in the same mess she is in. So he goes away, but is still holding on to her.

Anyway, this is a great song! I'm really digging this new album.

The quiet kid/little king is having troubles dealing with life and its issues. He feels lonely and hopeless, but at the same time don't want to worry/disappoint a close friend or family member; that's why he can't send them Christmas cards (that are usually happy and full of all the promising things that happened during the past year) and is isolating himself from them. Even though he knows you could never tell if you really know someone and all the things they are going through, he wishes there could be more emotions and less politeness and formality.

Strays Don't Sleep – For Blue Skies Lyrics 13 years ago
It makes sense being about his brother being in jail.

"How's your halo
Just between you and I
You and me and the satelites
I never believed you
I only wanted to"
The brother probably was being charged for something, but kept saying he was innocent, therefore the halo

"Remember that night among those same stars
We're in a red car you were sleep at my side
Going in & out of the headlights
Could I have saved you?
Would that have betrayed you?"
Maybe Matthew helped his brother to try and run away and now imagine if hea had just turned him in, his brother would be better now

Fountains of Wayne – All Kinds Of Time Lyrics 14 years ago
This is not about me at all. It's just a quote from this book that I thought fitted the sound scenario really good.
And if you read the book, you'll see he's not jealous of his dad or his glory days, if anything he's proud of him. He's just talking about how when you are seeing pictures of your parents, or anyone, when they were younger, they always seem so happy and like they're having the time of their life, when in reality you hardly ever think like that when you are living some situation and imagine that those are the moments you are going to tell your children about.

Fountains of Wayne – All Kinds Of Time Lyrics 14 years ago
It really reminds of this part by The Perks of Being a Wallflower (I know it's long, but it fits perfectly):

My dad played college baseball for two years, but he had to stop when Mom got pregnant with my brother. That's when he started working at the office. I honestly don't know what my dad does.
He tells a story sometimes. It is a great story. It has to do with the state championship for baseball when he was in high school. It was the bottom of the ninth inning, and there was a runner on first. There were two outs, and my dad's team was behind by one run. My dad was younger than most of the varsity team because he was only a sophomore, and I think the team thought he was going to blow the game. He had all this pressure on him. He was really nervous. And really scared. But after a few pitches, he said he started feeling "in the zone." When the pitcher wound up and threw the next ball, he knew exactly where that ball was going to be. He hit it harder than any other ball he ever hit in his whole life. And he made a home run, and his team won the state championship. The greatest thing about this story is that every time my dad tells it, it never changes. He's not one to exaggerate.
I think about all this sometimes when I'm watching a football game with Patrick and Sam. I look at the field, and I think about the boy who just made the touchdown. I think that these are the glory days for that boy, and this moment will just be another story someday because all the people who make touchdowns and home runs will become somebody's dad. And when his children look at his yearbook photograph, they will think that their dad was rugged and handsome and looked a lot happier than they are.

Yeah, for me it has always been about alcoholism as well. Makes a lot of sense!
Plus, I think the wolf part may refer to Thomas Hobbes' phrase of "Man is man's wolf". Meaning the only problem humans have is within ourselves.

I used to think that "Another soldier, says he's not afraid to die, well I am scared" was "I'm not a soldier, soldiers are not afraid to die, I am scared, I'm so scared". Kind of like it better that way.

But still, beautiful song.

The lyrics are right and the song is obviously about having bordeline personality disorder.

Borderline symptoms are really similar to bipolar and schizofrenic ones.
They're not really reliable or faithful to a relationship and are extremely aggressive. They don't care if other people are hurt by their actions, but nobody has the right to hurt them back or abandon them. They hate being alone, but always end up that way. And the most common cause for this disorder is a childhood trauma a.k.a having a broke home.

Love this song!
As for the meanings, I guess it's pretty simple, a girl wants a nice guy to be with, but everyone of them turns out to be just another jerk.

I know that the boy-girl relationship sounds more logical, but I can't help feeling like it's something deeper than that.

Maybe it's just because this is the situation I'm going through, but I feel like it's about growing up and moving out and changing your life, about leaving home, your family, your friends and perhaps even a boy/girlfriend behind and starting a sort of new life.

Not too sure about the "But I fear for our lives and I fear your closed eyes" part, tho.

I LOVE this song! The lyrics and the melody and the instrumental line are unbelievably beautiful.

The Wombats – MOVING TO NEW YORK Lyrics 16 years ago
For me the line "Christmas came early for me" is like he got to NY and it's such a bright, full of lights city that it looks like its Christmas decoration even thogh it's not Christmas yet.

For me it is just him trying to find the place where he belongs.

MGMT – Weekend Wars Lyrics 16 years ago
I have no idea why, but it seems to me like they're talking about all those people that used to be "hippies" and revolutionaries in the past. And now most of them just don't give a fuck anymore, now the world is simply mechanic and all we care about is how to make money and things easier to be done with technology.

Now everybody forgot what really matters and we don't know how to express ourselves and how to fight for what we want.

We became the robots we build.

Augustana – Sunday Best Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with haydenbunker in a few aspects.

Only that "When she's sleeping on the sofa/When she's laying in her sunday best" seems to make reference to "When I'm coming over sunday", like she just doesn't care much about he being or not there.

"And the ocean's getting warmer/And California's on her mind" Seems to me that Summer is coming and she's thinking about coming back for summer breaks. But he doesn't want her there anymore, "Don't come back", on the chorus.

"Los Angeles is tired/But we always seem to feel alright/But I won't" Here he makes a metaphor with your state of mind and where you are. Just like in here "I wonder why you never cry/When in Boston's always raining/And we never ever seemed alive". LA is place to party and have fun, after that, it's tired. And they always are alright after that, but not this time. Boston seems like a sad place, but she's not.

"Cause she's already out the door/She's already out of here/She's already gone away" She has already moved on.
"Well I'm already out the door/I'm already out of here/I've already gone away" And now he has too.
