Empire of the Sun – Standing on the Shore Lyrics 16 years ago
Okay well I have one interpretation but that's all it is, can't know for sure what they were really talking about :)

-i started getting ideas from the middle onwards and then looked at the start again so i'm going to put the 'meaning' i got in that order starting from:

The future's in my hands
I hold it in my palms
Engrave it the leylines running right down her arms

-this part reminds me of how we have ipods and iphones and all this handheld technology that allows us to control our lives, like we literally hold the future in our hands with this new technology.
-the leylines bit almost feels like there's this pressure to control the future and take on this technology as a part of your life, engraved like the way palm readers can read the lines in your hand that tell you future, you have no say in the matter, you're born with these prophetic markings.

Speak in silent tongues
Lies reflect the times
The ghosts and the shadows fill the living scene

-this reminds me of how communication is all via texting, and the internet etc so nothing is heard in the 'real world'
-and how lies can be created so easily via this medium because everyone is in control and has a voice so we have the opportunity to use this voice to tell lies without being detected
-and the ghosts and shadows are us in the real world, we're more alive in the cyber world than in real life, aren't fully alive until connected with this technology

Don't want to talk
All I hear is noise
Don't want to talk

-and the chorus really feels like a protest against this technology and pressure to have a voice via technology because "all i hear is noise" so no one is actually being heard (think of twitter, how many pointless tweets go unread on that site)
-so pretty much saying what's the point in talking if you're just going to join the noise that's polluting the world (via the net and phones etc.)

-then back to the start

Standing on the shore
Waiting for the ship in call
There's something in the way I move that keeps them on their own

-this was almost tying in with this no real voice idea, they're waiting for their 'call' but in the masses they remain unheard, not acknowledged because there are too many voice out there, screaming to be heard
-the 3rd line is hard, i don't know what that could mean

The stars explodes a storm
A billion seasons born
A shock to the waves I know, breaking far from shore

-this part could be describing all the voices of everyone expressing themselves and trying to be heard but i don't know..
-and the shock line could almost be talking about those from the older generations who aren't breaking on the shore (so who aren't "with it") and are almost alarmed by the exlosion of voices modern technology has created.

anyway let me know what you think, even if my interpretation isn't "right", that's the beauty of songs isn't it? we can all get what we want from it :)

yeah kateblahblah (lol) that makes sense.
also your interpretation is good because you haven't tried to go "oh brandon flowers definately means this because of this obviously!". you just applied it to your life how songs are meant to be applied and made it mean something to you. i think we should be less concerned with what it actually means (although i do admit that is interesting) and more concerned with what it means to us.

I'm going to right my first impressions without reading anyone else's meaning first.
I see it as a man who has possibly had an affair with a woman, and he is addressing the child that was born of it.

"That woman's on my back again.
I know she's got the best intention"

that's either the mother of the child or his other lover who is pressuring him to stick to someone or possibly to support the child

"When you began to relize
You know, got your daddy's eyes."
talking about how the child may eventually realise he takes after his father, the persona of the song

"And there's something I wanna say:
I love her too.
And all of this has got nothing to do with you.
And I'd like to stay but I can't because I've been fooling around"

he loves the mother of the child, but he needs to take responsibility for his actions now and he can't support this child or the woman, and its not to do with the child, its to do with the persona and how hes acted. he wishes he could be with them but he can't

"And I know that you called because you never even knew that it was hurting me"
this sounds like the child has made contact with the persona and he doesn't realise how much the persona's been feeling guilty about not being there for this child, the child doesn't understand the implications at the moment

"Sometimes PEOPLE GET TIRED" [i believe is the correct lyrics]
And I woke up a little too late to lie"

he can't pretend this hasn't happened anymore, and he can't lie to the child and pretend it's all alright
he's weary of living a lie.

i hope this helps :)

The Killers – Move Away Lyrics 16 years ago
okay this song is so hard to analyse.

what it

"Last time I said I was in control
I had 25 debts and we both know
When you come back now
You'll see my face
I said 25 debts and we both pray"

this is almost ironic, he's admitting he doesn't have control and he can't help that, that part almost sounds like a couple trying to deal with what fate has dealt them, and the rest of the song kinda sounds to me like he's really trying to live in the moment, trying to avoid the problems of the world but realises that there is consequences but he's not going to deal with them right now.

"Oh what a world that we both come in
I said hold it to the rock and let it in"

the world is buggered but they're part of it so they have to deal with it.

"These eyes don't see
Take your skin off when you listen to me"

seems like maybe aesthetics? or how things appear to be. possibly he doesn't see his partner anymore or choses not to see the state of the world or how things are, going with the theme hes chosing to live in the moment. and he wants whoever he's addressing to take off their outer falsity, they're appearance in a way, and just be who they are or admit things as they are because he won't stand for this masking of the truth?

"I wanna jump out of my skin
And watch the clouds"

he wants an escape from the physical confines of the body. watching the clouds is something almost whimsical and child like which we then associate with innocence, meaning he wants to be innocent again and peel off what he has to act like that comes from living in his skin, ie. being who he is.

The Killers – Sweet Talk Lyrics 16 years ago
Just before i start remember the point in songs is that we can all take our own interpretation from songs and make them apply to us that way. so there is no real right and wrong.
In saying that i feel that it could apply to any situation where someone is being dragged down by forces outside their control. this screams 'help me, i'm drowning'. except the drowning is within and not physical. it could be society, it could be drugs, it could be an unhealthy relationship, it could be alcohol, it could be anything but i really feel like this song is about a realisation that he is being dragged down and he needs to take charge of his life in a positive way, achieving that release. but i think he's saying he can't do it on his own, so "When you call me, hold on." meaning to me, when you say you're going to help me, don't give up, you need to commit and be my support, i can't do it without you.
but that's just my interpretation, i've tried not to let the other intrepretations influence me and really just say what i feel.
