Here's the real lyrics. Check out the acoustic version of the song to hear them clearly. Toxic Emissions Modern Conditions Vague Apparitions Lost in the discontents Cling to the senses Cling to the nothingness Laugh like you are not there Laugh like you do not care Tension undying here Soft and familiar Wide eyed and innocent Warm ways and imminent Breathe in, breathe in Breathe in, breathe in Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Lines in a paper Black clouds and vapour Now filled with summer Light rains and meteors Light rains and meteors Holes in the universe Crayons and scribblers Infinite bellies burst Cracks in the ocean crust Choke on the cosmic dust What will become of us? What will become of us? What will become of us? What will become of us? Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! Oblivion! |

You guys really have to watch the music video to understand the song. It's clearly about the abuse of power. Not shootings, not "Lord of the Flies" and not Iraq. It's more of a "close to home" song. In the beginning of the video, the guy is playing the magical guitar to make people happy. But when he realizes that he can make a fortune off of it, he starts demanding for money, which defeats the purpose of the guitar. And eventually, the nymph gets him back. In short, if you're given power, don't fuck with it. Do what you're supposed to do for the people, not yourself. "With a thousand lies and a good disguise Hit 'em right between the eyes Hit 'em right between the eyes" The "hit 'em right between the eyes" line is actually quite literal. It means that the person goes after those who oppose him when he has enough power, AKA "with a thousand lies and a good disguise". At that point, he gets rid of his problems by "hit[ting] 'em right between the eyes". "When you walk away, nothing more to say See the lightning in your eyes See 'em running for their lives" Everyone is scared of this ruthless person. The person has a look of violence in his eyes and everyone is scrambling to get clear. The chorus is where Holland drives home his point. However, the song doesn't reverse and say the consequences. It's more of a "don't fuck around with power because you will regret it" type of song. |

"I'm coming out of my cage And I've been doing just fine Gotta gotta gotta be down Because I want it all" The singer is trying to get over a past tragedy. He's only coming out of his cage now and he's doing alright now, but he wasn't a little while ago. "It started out with a kiss How did it end up like this It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss" Contrary to most people's belief, it's not the singer's kiss. It's his love who kissed another guy, possibly as a dare or just by accident. Because all this only started with a kiss. "Now I'm falling asleep And she's calling a cab While hes having a smoke And she's taking a drag Now they're going to bed And my stomach is sick And it's all in my head" Kinda obvious. She's supposed to be faithful to him but she cheats on him (the singer). He knows about it and he's hurt dearly, but because it's all in his head, he can't tell her that he knows. "But she's touching his chest now He takes off her dress now Let me go I just can't look, it's killing me And taking control" The pain of seeing his love being pleasured by someone else is too much for him... and yeah. The chorus just explains all the feeling running through his body, but the idea is that he's trying to make something good of it. That's why he's Mr. Brightside. |

I'm actually against the entire drug motif. I think its got more of a "1984" feeling to it. "Get straight, wait here while I try to find the exit sign When will you stop asking strangers No one wants what we want" The singer is trying to find a way out of her metaphorical prison. The last line especially works if the song is about the absence of truth in life. Nobody wants to find out the truth about any specific event and prefers to live their life thinking that "ignorance is bliss". "Keep one eye on the door, keep one eye on the bag Never expect to be sure" The door refers to people outside the singer's bubble who (s)he distrusts while the bag is for the people close the singer. Watch out behind you but in front sure because you can never know who will sell you out. "You're working for the police and the private, the pilots and the pirates Fingerprinted waiting for the train The doctor, the writer, the hairdresser Felt up and fingerprinted waiting for the train" First thing that pops into my mind is corruption in society. Nobody is safe from it not even the Police right down to hairdressers. The fingerprint line refers to never being able to go anywhere without disclosing your entire life to some random person. "There's a place that ends here I know When they close the gates I'll cry I'm so tired of never sleeping The whole world wants what we're on" There's a haven for those who seek the truth about life but once it's gone, so is everything. The sleeping feels like a more literal way of saying that the singer has to "sleep with one eye open" in order not to get stabbed in the back and the whole world wants to take away the longing of truth that the singer is yearning for. Can't get the next line but yeah. You see what I'm getting at. Basically, imagine the world today with a 1984 style of life. Paranoia and distrust runs rampant. My mediocre attempt at disecting this song. |

I really enjoy this song mostly because I feel that it connects up with past events in my life. There's just something about it that's magical. Anyways... "If the fire's out baby How you gonna keep me warm Supposing you let me With the door wide open no one can leave" The idea here seems to be that if the love between two people is gone, how is the singer going to continue going on. Also both people are at an impasse because neither can move or act. "I know it's a lie I want it to be true The rest of the ride is riding on you" My favourite part of the song. The singer has given his/her heart to the other person and now "the rest of the ride is riding" on them and thier actions. It's "I've done all I can do, your turn" type of idea. "Over goodbyes we'll buy some place For wishing you could Keep me closer I'm a lazy dancer When you move I move with you" I lumped the last line it to make grammatical sense. The singer wants to rekindle the lost flame of the relationship even though (s)he knows that everything is lost. The last two lines have me stumped though. "If somebody's got soul You gotta make them move Make them move" Another tricky one to get. I think it's more of a warning to other people not to let the same thing happen. Don't let go of your one love because then life isn't worth living anymore. That's my stab at this song. Either way, it's my favourite song on "Fantasies". |
