The Decemberists – The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid Lyrics 16 years ago
where exactly does it say that the queen made william out of a jar of ashes?
entoumbed in a cradle of clay doeasn't really translate to jar of ashes, and the rakes son was of age to fight back when the rake beat him to death and burned his body to hide the evidence... william was a baby when the queen found him abandoned, the rakes son issiac was buried. william was found in a reedy glen .... see where there are some missing links? william was turned into a fawn during the day to further distance him from mankind. he is only his human form at night when he is better kept out of sight. The rake was not put up to stealing Margaret by the queen but out of lust he kid napped her to rape and kill her, the queen just aided in his crossing the river because the rake would be cutting off williams connection to mankind.... ie margerat

Damien Rice – Accidental Babies Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it may be in between, I feel like it was an "oops encounter" where they were previously attached in a relationshp bordering on the darkside, have moved on and at some point ended up having a fling, why else would they feel the need to hide their disgrace?

The Decemberists – Isn't It a Lovely Night? Lyrics 16 years ago
The baby dies at the beggining of the drowned
"Margaret array the rocks around the whole before were sinking"
( margaret is burying the child most who seemingly was a still birth due to the rakes abuse)

Later: " tell me now tell me this forests son or rivers daughter?)
was it a boy or a girl
a willow on the willow wisp, our ghost will walk along the waters)
a baby onthe brink of life, OUr ghost ( our child) will walk along the waters... )

The Decemberists – The Hazards of Love 4 (The Drowned) Lyrics 16 years ago
i really dont understand why people keep saying she was raped...
why would she go back to the tiaga singing "columbine columbine please alert this love of mine tell him that his margaret comes along'
then in isn't this a lovely night " isn't this a lovely way we get in from our play isn't it babe?" a sweet little baby" It would be most unusual for her to have called her attacker "babe" and "love of mine" finally in the end she is singing Oh, my own true love oh my own true love can you hear me now? can you hear me love" again why the endearing names if he is no more than a man who asaulted her?

I agree the child isaiah was old enough to fight back and was also burned and buried in an urn. Where as william was a baby, pulled from " a reedy glen" in other words a watery area, not in the buried in an urn.

Guys, the child dies at the beggining of the song:

"Margaret, array the rocks around the hole before we're sinking
Margarat hurry and cover the grave we need to rush over the waters

And painting rings around your eyes, these peppered holes too filled with crying
her eyes are so red and swollen from crying that they are bloodshot ( peppered)

Tell me now, tell me this, a forest's son, a river's daughter
Tell me was it a boy or was it a girl?
A willow on the will-o'-wisp, our ghost to wander all of the water
Our baby who dies before growing, Our ghost who will wander the waters...
so sad, I know ...

The Decemberists – A Bower Scene Lyrics 16 years ago
Going on the idea that M. Is of noble blood, And taking that lyrics from the last song " 15 lithsome maidens lay alone in the bower/ 14 occupations paid to pass the idle hour" I would suggest that they are M.s ladies in witing and they are not working (keeping her company) Due to the fact that she is not up and around but sulking and impossibly in love.
And Indeed it is ia nun in charge of M. calling her out on her pregnancy and encouraging her to confess her sins ( or off herself as the popular beleif seems to be) ( when wilst thou trouble the waters of the cistern) Blackguard could mean scoundrel or it is also a discriptive word of a Peon of duty ( kitchen worker stableworker etc. So the nun could be asking who is this jack ass who got you pregnant and took the noble blood from your womb. or who is this jackass employee that we are going to fire or erase from duty... could be totally off just basing this on one theory that M is indeed a noblewoman...
