The Decemberists – O New England Lyrics 16 years ago
Yep, bitta2sweet, I was just about to say the same thing. He definetly says 'ill-gotten', I think he also says 'full-cotton' directly after. I can shed some light on this bit too if it helps!

I heard a Decemberists concert that is currently free to listen to on npr.org (just search decemberists and you'll find it, there's 3 on there, highest quality) and before this song he claims that it is about his only attempt to shoplift, like unspecialfish says. I think it must be the same show (or the same banter! Definitely the same tour though).

I think maybe the girl fell for him in New England where he stole something from a shop that she wanted, a scarf (I actually think he says 'full-cotton'). This of course happens before the song. There love is dwindling and so the song is about when they go to where they first met, but halfway through the trip everything seems to go wrong. He steals the same scarf he stole that one time, but this time around she doesn't care and so he's stuck with it. I base this on a few clues, mainly 'this is the fable of a failed attempt/to find new love in the seat of its origin'. They've gone back to where it began but they couldn't renew the love, it just stayed broken.

My opinion anyhow ^_^ I went to New England once (actually live in the UK, visited a friend in Rhode Island). We went there for the last weekend, it was very fun. The aquarium was great, thoroughly advised to anyone and everyone! :3

The Decemberists – Days of Elaine Lyrics 16 years ago
Well, Alain Delon is a famous French actor, but more famous for what he used to do when he was young. Kinda like James Dean. But this is someone -like- him, ie, charming & handsome. She stays with him despite him supposedly ODing on drugs o.o;;

It's typical Decemberists. It starts with her son leaving and never calling, then it's a song about a woman recalling her wretched past, waiting for her son to call. I think.

The Decemberists – Oceanside Lyrics 16 years ago
The band's from Portland, Oregon...right? I had a little thought and slipped 'Oceanside' into Wikipedia and it turns out that it's the name of an area in Oregon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceanside,_Oregon

And guess what..? It has a beach! The song has got to be referring to this place. In my opinion the Poe reference is just plain wrong - certainly @wesyncopate, note he sings our motherS, not our mother. Thus two mothers, not the same one, thus clearly showing that they're not related and actually disproving your point.

And I don't think he's singing about sex. I think he's just singing about the joy of a beach and the ocean beside it, perhaps also about sharing that joy with someone else ^_^ It's a happy song.
