Lotus Plaza – Monoliths Lyrics 5 years ago
This song expresses opioid/heroin addiction in such a unique and perfect way. While similar songs, like the Velvet Underground’s “Heroin,” share the isolation of monoliths, the velvets are desperate and panicked while LP is simply resigned to his habit. When Pundt sings “one of these days, I’ll come around,” the music swells in celebratory crescendo— in the addict’s mind, thinking about getting clean is almost as good as actually doing it. But the truth is, he loves the drug. He doesn’t want to change. Thus, “I’ll come around” gradually negotiates its way to “I hope I come round.” Just one of many concessions the addict makes as their “Monolith” consumes their entire life.

Grizzly Bear – Cheerleader Lyrics 16 years ago
I totally agree! I got the idea that "Cheerleader" points to the kids in the popular group at school who are more like than not responsible for the bullying of those who have a harder time fitting in. Lines like "Appear tame, it shows.... god let it go, chance and sow, nothing changing" could point to signs of violence in some of those who are being bullied but go ignored. "I'm shooting them myself, I should have made it matter" could be the sentiment of a student who witnessed this bullying but did nothing to stop it, causing him to feel personally responsible for the deaths of those killed when the radical students took their revenge in the form of a school shooting. Very interesting possibility although many of the songs on this album are very amorphous and open to multiple interpretations.

Mason Jennings – Jackson Square Lyrics 16 years ago
Definitely about a girl he fell in love with in New Orleans. She, sadly, went crazy over time until one day she committed suicide. At the beginning of the song hes about going to visit her grave and ends up telling the person with him the tragic story. At the end he mentions that "anyone who says that life is clear has never seen a mirror or been to Jackson Square." I think this means that if you think that the happenings of this life are straightforward, you've never looked inside yourself at your own insanity, nor have you gotten close enough to anyone else to experience theirs. He obviously by "loading [his] gun and trying not to go there" has experienced both. Sad song.

My Morning Jacket – The Way That He Sings Lyrics 16 years ago
This song, to me, is about what draws humans together. It's all throughout the song. Like others have said, it's some amorphous quality-- not the way a girl looks but the way she moves, that makes us fall in love with her, makes us feel something real for her. Its not the words or the band, its the way he sings, the way he pours his emotion out into the song, that makes me feel his pain and connect with him.

The song talks about how when others feel pain, we ignore it, bad things won't happen to us right? It's something intangible that rests outside of these events, (the way he sings) that evokes emotion in us and makes us feel pity, love or joy for another person. His mind blows to bits when they play that song because the feeling of connection that, in my opinion, can only be conveyed through the collaborative effort of music, words and voice, is too much for him to handle. Simply hearing someone else singing and expressing some emotion that the lister has felt before is where human connection and understanding is taken to a totally different level.

My Morning Jacket – Steam Engine Lyrics 16 years ago
Does anyone else see this song as an exploration of the metaphysical? I feel that James is trying to convey that its not the physical things in this life that contribute actual meaning, but rather those that are intangible. All the feelings that we experience through our senses are simply indications of the existence of something transcendent of the world in which we live. The experiences in which we are offered glimpses of these things are more meaningful, according to James, than the sum of their aesthetic value. In my opinion, when the song says, "None of this is physical, at least not to me... So, I do believe that anywhere it goes, it's always with me," is an expression of God's metaphysical omnipresence and power.

The very title of the song, to me, imparts that this world is powered by something beyond our senses. "Steam" being a reference to a "ghost" or metaphysical being that we cannot see, but whose presence we can feel, and "Engine" indicating it's driving force in our world, like God's omnipotent plan for all of us.

James tells others to "take your money and your drugs," he doesn't need them. The truth and peace that he experiences through his interaction with God offers him an abundant joy that these empty idols cannot touch. He has found meaning and value for his life in something beyond the pleasures and pursuits of our physical world.

James asks all who are still unsure of his feelings about God, (To anyone who wonders, what old Jebus (Jesus) meant to me...) to simply go to Red Patoka Sea, experience its beauty and magic, and their question will be answered. James had a personally meaningful experience here (your skin looks good in moonlight, and god damn those shaky knees), in the midst of its natural beauty, where he was weakened and humbled by his realization of God's glory. The song's thesis rests in that line, "To anyone who wonders, what old Jebus (Jesus) meant to me..." when placed in conjunction with "The fact that my hearts beating, is all the proof you need..." The inherent and miraculous beauty, complexity and mystery of life points to the reality of a higher power.

Finally, the song ends with the chanting of words that, on other sites, are listed as "I believe," but to me sound like some combination of the phrases "He bought it" or "He got 'em," referencing Jesus' salvation and love for sure. The music lifts the listener as James' chanting becomes reminiscent of a praise chorus, an overflow of emotion for his beautiful Creator.

Whether you agree with me or not, the emotion expressed and evoked by this song is truly a thing of beauty. Tell me what you think!
