This is such a beautiful song. I just love it from beginning to end. Especially when she says: "you can't spend your whole life waiting for God to kiss you" cause you honestly can't. and the one verse that goes: "After all, the children being born into A time of searching for some glory And the lie's still repeating through the years Dulce et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori" I think she's saying that they might think that dying for one's country is honorable, that's not exactly true. That they should think of something else then listing to that lie and path glory because there are other ways of reaching it. I don't know. I probably am wrong but that verse gets me every time I hear it. It just does. Regina Spektor is amazing, that she is. |

First off, this song is so beautiful. It just is. It may be a bit slow to some people, but I like it the way it is. Okay, off with how I envision this. Well I see this as basically a mother old and wrinkled and soon is going to face death. And she was not being able to love her child properly because when she was younger, she thought that just giving birth and living with the child was showing enough love. However she was proved wrong. When she sees other families smiling happily together, she realizes and she smiles slightly at the sight but a bit sad for not being able to give that same happiness to her child. Now that child she raised is gone. When it mentions "Drifting and floating and fading away" it means she's very very close to death at this point. So, she leaves the world regretting, waiting for the child to come by once more to see her so she can apologize to it for not being able to love it properly like she should have. Yeahhh...that's just how I see it. |

Well, what I believe this song is about is basically what everyone is saying. It's about someone missing a loved one. But I tend to see this more as an unrequited love. The person is always looking at that person, but that person realizes that the one they love won't ever love them back. Though sometimes their hope is brought up slightly when that other person is probably not quite happy with the person they are dating or something. A soft glow, a pure happiness, almost like the color of the snow with a light glow. It's almost like she's saying the feeling of that person's love is blossoming. "If you often smile But often don't smile Which do you do more often Smile.. or not? I dreamt a hydrant was covered in snow A white light glowing below I dreamt a hydrant was covered in snow A white light glowing below" However, that false hope that they told to themself is crushed and they wake up from their dream-like state. Then that glow vanishes and that person is dragged back to the cold dark world that is reality. "I know that you cannnot be here I know that you are not mine now" So I guess, when they realize and wake up from their fantasies, they look out a window, seeing someone painting their toenails as colors of the leaves when fall comes. It's like winter was when their pure thoughts of love and such came to be, and now that it's shattered, they think of it as the leaves falling off a tree during the autumn. But that's only what I see. So I'm not sure. I'm might just be thinking too much. |
