Just to clarify; the above lyrics are not the ones I submitted. Don't know why they have changed; but these have several errors in my opinion. Oh well............ |

| Tindersticks – Can We Start Again? Lyrics
| 16 years ago

"I did you wrong
But I'm sorry now "
Never going to be enough; there is no starting again.
"I was your man
I sang you songs
But they're so ugly now"
Some songs just speak to you of your own life. I'm sorry JZ, more than you will ever know; I'm sorry.

According to Marc Almond, this song is actually about a prostitute and her "lover". He feels that she is beneath him (no pun intended), probably guilty at his relationship with her and so he is leaving her. |

Pretty self explanatory lyrics. The USAs obsession with space exploration, at the expense of more earthly problems. Great song; Bob Calvert was a (certfiable) genius!

Beautiful love song to his infant daughter. Pretty straitforward lyrics; recalling moments with his daughter learning to walk. The mother has taken the daughter out of town and he is alone; have they split up? Have they just gone to visit friends? |

No comments so far on perhaps my favourite song of all time? My take on it: the man is travelling through life, making many mistakes along the way. He pretends, or perhaps believes that the past, the people he hurt don't matter to him, he was not at fault. He travels light, not carrying the burden of painful memories. This, of course, is a farce as the woman can see through his facade. She can see that he is running from the past, but that he can't escape the guilt of his actions. He carries all his emotional baggage, all his pain with him. Stunning song. Anybody else have a different take on it? |

I heard that this song was a tongue in cheek response to critics of the miserable-ist, melancholic mood of the first album. A spoken rather than sung fictitious tale of ill-fortune, misery and death. Hilarious in it's own way. |

One of my favourite Tindersticks songs; but, I thought the lyric was "And I've known all along" rather than "And I snore on and on". Also "I've got these swing doors from sunshine to the half light, and I keep them so well oiled" rather than "That peace when the door slams, soon shattered the hot light, I came so well-oiled". That is one of the beauties of Stuart's lyrics and delivery; it is not always clear what the words are , let alone the meaning. For me, this song (like so many of his) is about failing relationships and un-expressed love; the gulf between how you want to be and how you are. Beautiful. |
