On the surface, it's a song about Beltaine, the Pagan feast of summer, when the sun god, who died as a gift to the land at Samhain, or Halloween, returns to the fullness of his power, becoming again the lover of the goddess. Deeper than that though, it is a song of mourning for a deposed god, made a demon by the Christians. Thus the line "It has been two thousand years: The earth is soaked with blood and tears" It calls for a return of the exiled Pagan god, and a return to the ways of the Earth, warning us that if we do not start taking care of Her, we will destroy Her. |

I agree. I see a hint of The Salem Witch Trials here, though that may simply be because they were the most famous persecution of non-protestants. It goes beyond just the devil being a Christian myth. She is accusing her accusers, supposed Christians who murdered dozens of innocents, of being in the service of evil. |
