I agree with playitloud253. While this song is specifically about the writer's struggle with lust and pornography, I think it speaks to those who struggle with any kind of addiction. The first verse is the writer explaining to God why he can't give Him his whole heart. He's still hanging on to his addiction, and until he lets go of it, God cannot have all of him. Throughout the song, "She" is used as a personification of his lust. The reference to "her hollow bones" talks about how shallow lust is. There is nothing more to it than what is on the outside. "Every year she's back for the season. I have to keep my windows closed." This line refers to addiction's persistence. It may go away for a while, but If you don't guard yourself (keeping windows closed), you'll slip up and fall back into sin. The next couple of lines refer to how his mother tried to protect him by keeping him in church. Despite her efforts, his curiosity got the best of him and he wound up stepping away from what he knew was right. As others have said, "Keepin it pretty is gettin pretty old" is a continuation of Made Too Pretty. To me, it's about him getting tired of pretending to be righteous, when he knows that he's filthy inside from his secret sin. The rest of the song is pretty straightforward about his struggle his lust. "Round and round we go" just refers to the constant cycle of sin and repentance. "She wont stay dead. Stay down." is talking about how no matter what, he can't seem to get rid of his addiction. "She" constantly follows him. Even when he thinks that he's succeeded in burying her, she comes back up again. Anyway, that's just my interpretation of it. If to you, it's about loving a non-Christian, then that's fine. The beauty of lyrics is that they mean different things to different people. Considering Cody has written openly about his struggle with lust and pornography in the past, I feel that this song is no different. It's quickly becoming one my favorites off the new record. |
